Did you know that disposing of seafood processing waste, like lobster and crab shells, has become an increasing challenge for the seafood industry in Nova Scotia? Seafood waste is costly to dispose of and have slow biodegradation rates but they are also rich in nutrients. To contribute to resolving this waste problem, Divert NS has provided funding to Skaldyr Inc, a technology company that sustainably upcycles seafood waste into value-added ingredients. According to Nova Scotia’s 2023 landfill waste audit report, recyclable paper takes up 19% of our province’s landfill space. In fact, paper products are the second most prominent material in our landfills and have increased by 39% since the last waste audit in 2017. Over 25,000 tonnes of packaged food ended up in Nova Scotia’s landfills in 2023. When food (even packaged food) ends up in the landfill it releases harmful methane gas, which is a key contributor to climate change. Luckily, Nova Scotia has excellent composting programs that turn our food scraps and other organics into valuable resources. Think before you throw.
