DESTA Black Community Network
Civic and Social Organizations
Empowering the Black community to achieve their educational, employability and entrepreneurship goals.
About us
DESTA was founded in 2006 with a mandate to focus on the employability needs of Black youth in Little Burgundy. An integrated strategy was adopted to address both systemic and personal barriers to employment, such as justice involvement, housing, and lack of resources. Recognizing the economic needs of participants, Desta’s mission was redefined in 2017 to empower Black youth between the ages of 18 to 35 to achieve their educational, employability and entrepreneurship goals through tutoring, skills training programs, mentorship, individual coaching, career guidance, access to internship opportunities, and an in-house marketing consulting agency. Desta supports social justice work through it’s re-entry program, which is currently offering individual support with legal issues, housing, employment and health to participants who are either currently incarcerated or were recently released from the prison system. Desta also launched a Food Security program to offer food to the community through several, local black-owned business partners, supporting the social and economic needs of the community. Desta is located on unceded Indigenous lands of which the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation are recognized as the custodians. Tiohtiá:ke (Montreal) is historically known as a site of meeting and exchange for many First Nations. Today it is home to a diverse population of Indigenous and other peoples. We respectfully acknowledge this legacy as it informs past, present, and future in our relationships with Indigenous and other peoples within the Montreal community.

DESTA is proud to launch our Community Pantry and free Monthly Food Workshops! Located in front of DESTA’s office, in Little Burgundy, the pantry builds upon our existing partnerships with Black-owned farms, cooperatives, and restaurants to provide the community with a steady stream of fresh, healthy foods. It will hold a mixture of donated foods – monthly dry meal packages from our incubator chefs, dry goods, and fresh produce – from restaurants, Sankofa Farming Cooperative, and partnering Black-owned farms. The Community Pantry program will be accompanied by monthly free cooking workshops provided by DESTA Incubator chef, and owner of XSPENCIVE Cuisine, Jamal Spence. Chef Jamal will use pantry items to create healthy meals, and share culinary skills and techniques. The first workshop will explore seasonal foods with an interactive demonstration on how to prepare nutrient-rich salads including watercress, arugula, spinach, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, apples, cucumber, melons, herbs, and mushrooms. 📍Join us on September 9, 2024 from 12-2PM at DESTA — 1950 Rue Saint-Antoine O, Montréal, QC H3J 1A5 📢 The Food Pantry will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis 💡Advanced registration is required for our workshop! DESTA invites you to participate in our Black Wellness Focus Group on Wednesday, August 21st, from 6:00-8:30pm! Join us at DESTA on 1950 Rue Saint-Antoine O. If you are a Black English-speaking Montrealer, we want to hear from you. Come share your thoughts on the wellness needs, challenges, interests, and goals within the community. For Black communities, addressing wellness needs is especially crucial due to the unique challenges they face. Systemic inequalities, discrimination, and limited access to resources often lead to heightened stress, poorer health outcomes, and reduced quality of life. By prioritizing wellness in these communities, we can foster resilience, enhance mental health, and empower individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. Don't miss this important conversation, enjoy food and refreshments, and get the chance to win a $50 gift card! 💡Register on Eventbrite to reserve your spot: https://lnkd.in/grhrqsTF #desta #dareeverysoultoachieve #blackwellness #blackmentalhealth #blackmontrealcommunity #wellness #mentalhealth #montreal
