About us

The City of Grande Prairie provides programs, services, infrastructure and facilities that are the basis for much of the activity in our community. Grande Prairie is the youngest city in Canada with a median age of 30.3 and one of the fastest growing communities in North America. The 2016 federal census recorded 63,166 residents up 13.5% from 2011. Whether it is parents pushing a stroller, children filling the Eastlink Centre or families biking one of the many trails, there are signs of youth everywhere you turn. Grande Prairie’s youthfulness is a result of the growing opportunities presented by its role as a regional hub as well as the area’s many natural resources.

September 30 marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, an annual occasion to reflect on the history of residential schools, walk together on a path to reconciliation and deliver on the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions 94 Calls-to-Action. The day also aligns with Orange Shirt Day, which acknowledges the personal and inter-generational impacts of residential schools. Flags at all City facilities are being lowered in observance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. “As we mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we recognize the resilience, strength and courage of residential school survivors, their families and communities. The City of Grande Prairie is proud to have taken steps towards reconciliation and strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities. On behalf of Grande Prairie City Council, we remain committed to reconciliation and encourage all community members to take time to reflect and learn on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.” - Mayor Jackie Clayton Read the full statement and learn about the City's steps towards reconciliation here: https://bit.ly/3ZMvXS9.
