City of Markham reposted this
It’s a wrap! Last week, team Markham joined York Link | York Region Economic Development, our incubator/accelerator partners ventureLAB, YSpace, York University and Seneca Polytechnic HELIX and industry leaders at #CollisionConf 2024 to showcase our local / regional innovation corridor – Canada's 3rd largest tech cluster supported by robust innovation activities and dense tech talent pool, that continues to place the City of Markham on the global map as desirable location to invest. As this was the final year of #CollisionConf in Toronto, the City of Markham would like to express our special thanks to York Region (The Regional Municipality of York) - Jonathan Wheatle, Robert Unterman, Charles Banfield, Gordon Scheel, CITP, Katie Maginn, and Jenifer Benakis for your leadership in bringing together our regional communities and industry partners under a strong physical #YRtech brand at Collision for the last 4 years. The Region helped create the platform that supported Markham to implement our robust activation programs, which helped spotlight our innovation activities to international delegates and resulted in Markham’s engagement with hundreds of tech startups, entrepreneurs, and talent. When #CollisionConf came to Toronto in 2019, York Region was among the first few Canadian communities to leverage the Conference to establish a strong Regional presence - Markham also joined to deliver a dynamic program where Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti launched the vision for the #MiX -Markham Innovation Exchange District – a landmark of 1,900 acres of private and public land dedicated to #innovation, and #advanceproduction activities to support Markham’s key industry clusters (#semiconductor, #autotech, #EV, #foodtech, #greentech, #medtech, #advancedmanufacturing, #filmingproduction, #creativeindustries, R&D). Markham's program also brought together accelerator and industry partners to showcase technology innovations including UNIS Technology, Microart Services Inc., Qualcomm, IBM, General Motors, AMD, Bluewrist Inc., CIeNET Technologies, Hop In Technologies, and others. Following Covid, when the world re-opened and #CollisionConf physically relaunched in 2022, Markham was back in partnership with York Region and our industry partners to deliver critical announcements of new global expansion investments into Markham including: Swedish global engineering design leader Syntronic - A Global Design House’s new office in Markham, and Astera Labs’ first Canadian Design Centre in Markham that focused on fabless semiconductor design - expansion from US Silicon Valley. These expansions helped generate hundreds of engineering jobs. Markham’s Collision experience has been fantastic in putting the City on the global map, and this is owing to the partnership collaboration with York Region, our industry and ecosystem partners.
