Current approaches to leukemia treatment look to improve outcomes by optimizing treatment after the malignancy is diagnosed. But what if there were opportunities for pre-emptive treatment? “I’ve been working with zebrafish for 22 years and it still amazes me how similar these tiny tropical fish are to humans – more than 70% of the proteins in the human body are the same as zebrafish." said Dr. Jason Berman, CEO and Scientific Director of the CHEO Research Institute and the Vice-President of Research at CHEO. In a recent study, published in Leukemia from Springer Nature Group, researchers at the Berman Lab detailed how they used zebrafish to model germline mutations in the recently identified Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) gene, DNAJC21. Their aim was to characterize the underlying disease biology and identify therapies to restore normal blood cell production, to prevent leukemia development. Recently, I invited the team behind 24Hr Yogapalooza into the CHEO Research Institute Berman Lab located at University of Ottawa to learn a bit more about the incredible research our team is conducting with zebrafish. ❓🐟 Did you know that zebrafish share 70% of their genetic material with humans? That means we are 70% zebrafish! Zebrafish also share many of the same tissues, organs, and cells with humans, which is why they are such a good model to study human diseases like cancer. As a pediatric oncologist, I meet with families to deliver the news they never want to hear – a cancer diagnosis. But as a pediatric cancer researcher, I have the incredible opportunity to give these families hope because of the research conducted in the Berman Lab, at the CHEO Research Institute and around the world. 📅 September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so I’m going to share a few posts to raise awareness of the impactful cancer research and the discoveries in which I count myself privileged to be involved. Last week, I joined leading pediatric cancer researchers from around the world at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Advances in Pediatric Cancer Research conference held in #Toronto. Talk about a dose of inspiration! Learning first-hand about the advancements in the field, including novel diagnostics, treatments, and the disparities in outcome for certain ethnic groups was eye-opening and highlighted that we have come a long way in childhood cancer survival but still have much more work to do. We had the chance to present a poster that is a collaboration between the CHEO Research Institute Berman Lab located at University of Ottawa, the pan-Canadian PROFYLE team and the ZERO Childhood Cancer Program in #Australia. The PROFYLE project uses zebrafish to predict drug responses in individual children. The study we are showcasing is a proof-of-concept that leverages well-annotated clinical and mouse model data from pediatric cancer patients in the ZERO program and remarkably demonstrates high correlation in our zebrafish models with patient responses to therapy. Critically, from a practical perspective, zebrafish models are much faster and, in some cases, more representative than the results observed in the mice. ⭐ This means that we can use the zebrafish to tailor the drug treatments that will work best for a specific kid – precision medicine, resulting in faster, more effective treatments for childhood cancers. #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #cancerresearch #CHEOResearch Alex Munter Steve Read Anick Losier Lesleigh Abbott CHEO CHEO Foundation

“This trial could change the way we care for premature babies. It’s my hope that these tiny patients will have a better chance to thrive, grow up, and have an impact on the world around them,” said Dr. Thébaud, a neonatologist and senior scientist at CHEO and The Ottawa Hospital and professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
