A new article sheds light on the Ojibwe community's efforts along the southeast shores of Lake Nipigon to embrace biomass as part of their sustainable forestry practices. This initiative aims to boost economic development and encourage community members to return home. Highlighted in the article is CHAR Tech’s key partnership with the Lake Nipigon Forest Management Inc. (LNFMI), a cooperative of four First Nations communities. Together, the organizations have made significant strides with the establishment of a $50-million regional biomass facility that will utilize pyrolysis technology to convert unused wood residue into renewable natural gas (RNG) and biocarbon. RNG will heat local homes and businesses, while biocarbon will aid in reducing coal use in steel plants across southern Ontario.
