We recently visited some of our fair trade organic coconut growers in Sri Lanka to participate in the distribution of farming equipment, organic fertilizer and school supplies that were purchased using fair trade premiums we sent from our coconut milk imports. We received the warmest welcome and were touched by the warmest smiles. Fair trade is more than just a minimum price, it’s a long-term partnership based on mutual respect that uplifts not only the lives of fair trade farmers but also their families and communities. This past week, we celebrated not only the Grand Opening of a new coconut milk facility dedicated to the production of Cha's Organics coconut milk but also the inauguration of a wetlands restoration project aimed at saving elephant lives, made possible by our 1% For The Elephants fund. In partnership with the local Buddhist community at Umandawa Global Buddhist Village and experts from the wildlife department, we’re restoring a once majestic lake that had served as a watering hole for elephants since ancient times, where the dam had broken and water levels had been severely reduced. Once this wetlands ecosystem is restored, the hundred of elephants who live in the surrounding wildlife reserve will have access to more water and lush grazing areas, reducing their need to wander across train tracks and into villages in search of water and food. Currently, an average of 2 elephants are killed every month crossing the nearby tracks and many more become casualties of the human-elephant conflict when they raid homes and crops. Since elephants mainly roam to find water and green grazing areas and migrate following rainy weather patterns, our team of experts estimates that this wetlands restoration project will reduce elephant deaths in the area by about 50%.
