Matthew Holmes SVP of Policy & Government Relations, discusses the new DST tax on CBC's Power & Politics “What we saw in France, they put this tax in place, and it was immediately pushed onto the consumers. Canadian consumers will see prices go up.” This government’s new DST tax doesn't just impact big tech; it could have far-reaching implications. Canadian families, businesses, and workers could face increased costs. And it could complicate our critical trade relationship with the U.S. at a very sensitive time. After a busy weekend, I'm relieved to see goods are still flowing through our British Columbia ports (for now), but even the threat of labour disruption continues to harm predictability for Canadian businesses. Thanks to Angela Jung from Global News BC for reaching out to discuss the importance of our west coast ports to the Canadian economy, as well as the impact of repeated labour disruptions on Canada's trade relationships and global competitiveness.

"Government simply can’t allow our British Columbia ports to shut down for a second year in a row—they need to act as swiftly as possible to prevent a repeat of the impacts on Canadian families, Canadian businesses, and the Canadian economy." Our Senior Director of Transportation, Infrastructure & Construction, Pascal Chan talks to The Wall Street Journal's Paul Vieira about the risk of a second strike at the B.C. ports.
Important coverage from Paul Vieira for The Wall Street Journal on the escalating situation over the weekend at our British Columbia ports. 🏗 In our conversation, I noted the Canadian Chamber of Commerce's Business Data Lab analysis of Employment and Social Development Canada data, which revealed that 2023 saw the most days lost to labour disputes since 1986. These repeated labour disruptions, as well as the threat of even more, are a terrible blow to Canada’s diminishing reputation as a reliable place to do business. 📉 https://lnkd.in/gJ4AuxvV

On June 21, we submitted a comprehensive response to the International Trade Committee's study on the upcoming 2026 review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), advocating for enhanced North American economic cooperation. Our submission emphasizes the urgent need to address trade irritants, such as the government’s #digitalservicestax, in advance of the 2026 CUSMA review. The federal government’s decision to impose a retroactive and discriminatory #DST will make life more expensive for Canadian families, businesses and workers, and may also lead to retaliatory measures from the U.S. that will undermine the bilateral relationship at this critically important time. By addressing these issues proactively, the government can strengthen the foundation of North American trade and ensure the continued success of #CUSMA. "Job growth was disappointing for June," says Andrew DiCapua, our Senior Economist about today's job report. "The acceleration in wage growth is concerning and reinforces the cautious stance the Bank will take at their next meeting. They’re in a serious dilemma with both the unemployment rate and wages rising." The latest Labour Force Survey shows Canadian #employment remained largely unchanged in June, falling short of the anticipated 25K job gain, with the #unemployment rate rising to 6.4%. Generative AI represents a generational opportunity to prompt #productivity gains for Canadians, especially at a time when improving our weak performance is crucial. However, greater business adoption is necessary for generative AI to deliver on its potential. Building generative #AI tools and systems on quality data foundations will yield reliable outcomes that users, consumers and businesses can trust, which will in turn help Canada reach the adoption levels needed. In this Q&A, our Senior Director of Digital Economy, Technology and Innovation, Ulrike Bahr-Gedalia, speaks with Mike Branch, Vice-President of Data and Analytics at Geotab about their perspective on this topic and how the global leader in connected vehicle and asset solutions is using #GenAI.
