In celebration of International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems, take a boat ride with us down the meandering river to uncover what swims beneath a mangrove forest 🌾 #DYK There are 80 different species of mangrove trees ranging in height from small shrubs to trees that stand 40 meters above the water, but all species thrive in low-oxygen, high-saline coastal environments. #WorthMoreStanding #NatureBasedSolutions #ProtectOurPlanet #Canopy

About us
Canopy is an award winning environmental nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the world’s forests, species and climate. Canopy’s story is rooted in a passion to protect the endangered, carbon-rich forests around the world from destruction. Canopy’s approach focuses on creating solutions and working together with the largest buyers of pulp and paper products to achieve a much greater impact. We understand that business leaders can be powerful forces for environmental change. We work with companies to craft sustainable purchasing guidelines and with partners to develop permanent and systemic solutions that protect forests. Started over a decade ago as Markets Initiatives, Canopy has grown and attracted a group of passionate environmental and social justice activists.

Picture this: Over 3 billion trees, many from the world's vital forests, are destroyed annually for paper packaging. It's hard to imagine, right? For World Nature Conservation Day, watch our latest video to put it into perspective. 🎬 Today, one of the most pervasive myths is that logging forests for paper packaging is the answer to plastic pollution. But this approach swaps one environmental disaster for another. In the face of climate and biodiversity crises, safeguarding forest ecosystems is imperative. Canopy works with the world’s savviest innovators to scale low-impact Next Gen alternatives – for brands to replace both plastic and paper. We can make packaging from wheat straw and ag waste and save irreplaceable forests. 🌾 Not paper. Not plastic. Better! PAPER MADE FROM FALLEN LEAVES! 🍁 Releaf, one of Canopy’s innovation partners, is based in the Ukraine and is the world’s first manufacturer of sustainable paper packaging solutions from fallen leaves. While many leaves should be composted or left to rejuvenate your yard, 10.5 million tons of yard trimmings are still landfilled every year in the U.S. alone. Releaf takes discarded leaves and produces sustainable kraft paper for printing, wrapping goods, and manufacturing paper bags, corrugated packaging, and other paper products. Their innovative technology doesn’t use chemicals, is more climate-friendly than traditional paper production, and saves forests from the chopping block. It’s a triple win for people, business, and the planet. #Releaf #ReleafPaper #gogreen #ecodesign #goinggreen #nature #sustainability #eco #sustainable #earth #sustainabledesign

As stewards of this planet, it is our responsibility to change our behaviours to prevent environmental damage and focus on implementing solutions to reverse the current trend. In the west, with summer wild fire season upon us, our ancient forests, key in fighting climate change, are under threat. Rising temperatures weaken their natural resistance, making them more vulnerable. This isn’t just about wildfires—it’s about the survival of our planet. 🌲💬 Listen to Canopy's Nicole Rycroft and author John Valliant Tree Talks, where they explored climate change, wildfires, and solutions from Vaillant's acclaimed works. https://lnkd.in/gd5BvmPx #Irreplaceable #WorthMoreStanding #NatureBasedSolutions #CanopyStyle #Pack4Good #NextGenNow #Canopy

Bears are facing increasing threats due to human-driven forces. 🐻🌲🪓 Their homes are being destroyed, leading to food shortages and closer contact with humans, often with fatal consequences. We share our planet with these magnificent creatures, and it's our responsibility to protect them and their habitats for generations to come. #HaltBiodiversityLoss #Wildlife #ForNature #NatureNeedsHalf #ActOnClimate #Pack4Good #CanopyStyle #NextGenNow #Canopy

🌳🐒 Did you know young orangutans are also skilled architects? Starting at just six months, they learn the art of nest building from their mothers, perfecting this essential survival skill over the next seven years. These treetop havens offer safety and comfort. Researchers believe this insight hints at how our ancestors' brains developed, noting that both our ancestors and orangutans started building nests around the same time. Let's appreciate these incredible engineers!

🕊️ Nelson Mandela was a tireless advocate for peace, social justice, and environmental protection both in his homeland and across the globe. In 2009, the United Nations designated July 18 as "Nelson Mandela International Day" (Madiba Day) to honour his significant contributions to democracy, freedom, peace, and human rights worldwide. Today we honour his legacy by continuing to fight for equality, justice, and a sustainable future for all.

🌿 Meet the Elateriospermum tapos in Sumatra’s Leuser Ecosystem🌳 Besides its incredible name, Elateriospermum tapos can grow up to 263 ft tall and its diameter can measure up to 184 ft! 🤯 The seed extract is commonly used by local communities as a remedy for chronic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. 🌱 The island of Sumatra is a treasure trove of biodiversity, from lowland to mountain forests 🌳🐾 However, in just 70 years, Sumatra's once-vast rainforests have shrunk to a few isolated remnants due to deforestation. The Leuser Ecosystem is the biggest and most vital of these remaining areas. However, 58% of the Leuser remains unprotected and more needs to be done to create a conservation economy that allows the rainforest and local communities to thrive. Let's appreciate and protect these unique places and species that add so much richness to our natural world! 💚
