Today, as part of our celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day and in partnership with the City of Prince George, we unveiled a new public art in the foyer of a municipal facility - the Canfor Leisure Pool. The new art piece, titled ‘Talukw Bah Bedukaih’, and meaning Dipping for Salmon, was created as a collaboration between local Indigenous graphic artist Ray Desjarlais and their mother, Kym Gouchie of the Lheidli T'enneh Nation. ”Canfor commissioned this public art piece to honour the Lheidli T’enneh People and to help bring unique, local Indigenous traditions and cultural practices into the heart of our community gathering spaces,” said Kerri Simmons, Canfor’s Director of Indigenous Partnerships. “We recognize the unique place of Indigenous artists as creators, interpreters, and transmitters of Indigenous cultural continuity. In our commitment to support Truth and Reconciliation, Canfor looks for opportunities to amplify the voices of Indigenous Peoples on whose land we have the privilege of operating on. Witnessing the collaboration and the intergenerational sharing between the artists, has been such a privilege and resulted in a beautiful gift to the community of Prince George and its visitors,” she concluded.

Today is National Indigenous People’s Day and we join Canadians from coast to coast in honouring Indigenous Peoples’ heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements. Today is a celebratory day. Indigenous People play an extremely important role in our business, now more than ever. Canfor honours the authentic history of North America and its original people. We acknowledge all Nations who live, work and play, and who help us steward the land on which we do business. Let’s all continue our journey to understand Indigenous cultures, communities, histories and customs, and the deep traditional knowledge that they hold. May is Military Appreciation Month which honors current and former members of the US Military. Meet Cameron Kern, Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic based in DeRidder, Louisiana. As a mechanic in wood products manufacturing, he helps with servicing equipment and training new equipment operators, ensuring safe operations at our facility. Prior to joining Canfor, Cameron served four years in the United States Marine Corps. Cameron credits his military experience with instilling traits such as adaptability, initiative and a keen attention to detail. As we celebrate Military Appreciation Month, we would like to give special thanks to the service members and veterans at Canfor whose contributions enrich our company and communities every day. #MilitaryAppreciationMonth

Join us as we celebrate the incredible dedication of Frank Ogiamien, recipient of Canfor’s 2024 Community Builder Award in Canada! Armed with bags, gloves, litter pickers and a strong sense of purpose, Frank spends most of his weekends picking up litter — in fact, he can tell you with precision that he’s picked up more than 75,000 pieces! As a Digital Analyst at our Canfor Administration Centre in Prince George, BC, Frank puts his skills to good use through an app called Citizen Science of Litter that allows users to track trash in the city and where to focus clean-up activities. He has also co-founded the Nature Clean Team Prince George and runs a YouTube channel to educate and inspire others, including the Canfor Clean Team, to join him on the mission clean-up. While seemingly small and simple, Frank’s efforts have big rewards. In honour of Frank’s outstanding community volunteerism, Canfor’s Good Things Come From Trees Foundation will be making a donation in Frank’s name to Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS), supporting their work to raise awareness about the impact of waste on our environment.

A big round of applause to Michael Harris, Canfor’s 2024 Community Builder Award in the U.S.! To say Michael wears many hats is a huge understatement. By day, he’s our Quality Control Supervisor at the DeRidder facility in Louisiana, but in his off-hours, he’s a youth advisor, mentor, community leader, pastor, veteran liaison, advocate for the elderly, and a friend to many throughout Beauregard Parish. A veteran himself, Michael established the Beauregard Community Coalition as a channel for his continued community service. With all the community causes that Michael is involved with, it’s his dedication to the well-being and growth of youth that stands out the most. As a youth mentor, Michael has helped lower juvenile crime rates and increase high school graduates. He always makes time to travel to basketball and football games, track competitions, military ceremonies, and college graduations to show his ongoing support to the youth he has mentored over the years. One of the remarkable aspects of Michael's service is his capacity to inspire optimism in others. In recognition of Michael’s remarkable community work, Canfor’s Good Things Come From Trees Foundation is making donations in his name to a few of his charities of choice: Lovely’s Performing Arts, DeRidder Youth Football League, Establisher, Establish him, and the Beauregard Community Coalition.
