#ICYMI: Major milestone in the development of Heart Aerospace regional hybrid-electric aircraft! The Swedish company has unveiled its first full-scale demonstrator, Heart X1, for its ES-30 hybrid-electric aircraft. The Heart X1 features a 32-meter wingspan and will undergo ground testing for operations like charging, taxiing, and turnaround procedures. Its first fully electric flight is planned for Q2 2025. This demonstrator is crucial in advancing the ES-30’s development, setting the stage for the next step, the Heart X2, a pre-production prototype expected to fly hybrid-electric in 2026. This builds on Heart Aerospace's February news where it raised $107 million in Series B funding to support the ES-30's development, including a $5 million (USD) investment from Air Canada who also has a purchase agreement for 30 aircraft. With over 1,400 attendees from across the globe—including government leaders, industry pioneers, and experts—we felt the very essence of global harmonization. The powerful conversations and inspiring sessions highlighted the global commitment from safety to sustainability and legal frameworks to community engagement. At its core, this event was a powerful reminder that the future of air mobility is a shared endeavour. Together, we’re laying the foundation for a harmonized framework that will ensure the safe, sustainable, and equitable deployment of AAM technologies. The potential is limitless—from urban and regional connectivity to remote access and life-saving emergency support. The opportunity to collaborate with ICAO on such a tremendous event reinforced our belief in the strength of collective action. Day 3 Recap of International Civil Aviation Organization AAM 2024 Symposium: Charting the Future of Automation, Airworthiness, and the Global Narrative for AAM! The afternoon kicked off with the session Autonomy and Automation, moderated by Anna Dietrich, Senior Policy Advisor at AUVSI — Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International. The panel explored how digital ecosystems will support AAM operations with new levels of autonomy and automation. Dr Oleksandra Molloy from UNSW Canberra, Wes Ryan of Northrop Grumman, Jolana Dvorska from Honeywell, and David Oord of Wisk shared their perspectives on how automation will redefine operational procedures and what new regulatory frameworks might be needed. The discussion highlighted the importance of staying adaptable as AAM technology evolves. AAM promises a range of aircraft beyond passenger and cargo transportation, and the session - Airworthiness Considerations for AAM, focused on how airworthiness standards will evolve to accommodate this diversity. Moderated by Nina Brooks (ICCAIA), Oliver Reinhardt (Volocopter), Roberto Honorato (ANAC Brazil), Giuseppe Scannapieco (EASA), Kah Han Tan (CAAS), Yousuf Hashim Al Azizi (GCAA UAE), and Arnaud Coville (SkyDrive), provided valuable insights into tailoring airworthiness requirements to fit the unique demands of AAM operations while maintaining stringent safety standards. In the final session of Day 3, Establishing our AAM Global Narrative, the focus shifted to the critical importance of communication and definitions of AAM. David Dunning from GAMA moderated the conversation on how the AAM community can craft a cohesive narrative throughout the development and integration of this new industry. Panellists Catherine Roy from Thales, Elan Head from The Air Current, Jake Goldman from BETA TECHNOLOGIES, and Benjamin Ivers from Boeing discussed methods for building public trust, managing perceptions, and navigating communication challenges during various phases of AAM deployment. As Day 3 wrapped up, it became clear that the future of AAM is not just about innovative technologies but also about regulatory readiness, operational safety, and effective global communication. Together, the insights from these panels showcased the intricate balance required to make AAM a reality—and the continued collaboration needed among stakeholders to ensure success.
