To help contain the spread and preserve the growth and survival of oysters, Primary Control Zones have been established in the following areas: 📍 Bedeque Bay 📍 Boughton River 📍 Southwest River / New London Bay 📍 Between Lennox Island and Black Banks The collection, sampling and testing of oysters from other bodies of water in PEI is ongoing and the areas have been placed under quarantine. 📢 Important update for the fall 2024 lettuce imports! 🥬 🚜 To ensure the safety of our food, the #CFIA has implemented measures to prevent contaminated romaine lettuce from entering Canada. 📍 Each importer must have a program in place to test for the presence of E. coli in romaine lettuce. ** This applies to imports from Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Benito, and Monterey. As importers, your cooperation with CFIA's temporary import requirements is vital to ensuring safe, high-quality produce. Marine foods have been harvested by Indigenous communities since time immemorial, but climate change and other environmental impacts are putting the safety of food sources at risk. A collaboration between the @CanadianFoodInspectionAgency Burnaby Laboratory, VIU and Indigenous communities aims to increase food security and sovereignty. Dr. Timothy Green, VIU’s Canada Research Chair in Shellfish Health and Genomics, says there are a range of marine biotoxins that phytoplankton produce and two of these are lethal to humans. VIU is working on two projects with the CFIA: sample preparation and sea urchin testing. This will allow the CFIA to redirect resources to increase testing capacity. “Knowledge transfer happens organically when we work side-by-side. CFIA is thrilled to be a partner on the bench with VIU, building internal and external laboratory capacity in the shellfish sector,” says Carolyn Bateman, Director of the CFIA’s Burnaby Laboratory.
