Together, we are Canada’s Lifeline

About us

We are Canada’s biological lifeline. We are the connection between the sincere generosity of donors and the heartfelt appreciation of recipients, between the profound discoveries of science and the joyful restoration of health. As such, we are nationally responsible for a secure system of life essentials for transfusion or transplantation that’s reliable, accessible and sustainable. That’s why our organization must be efficient, our performance disciplined. We must work as one with our colleagues and partners at all levels. We must be prudent yet smart, rigorous yet agile, capable yet concerned. And we must be innovative, reinventing today so we can find better answers for tomorrow. In a very real way, what we do affects the well-being of all Canadians and every day we must earn their trust. We make a difference and in that, we take great pride Canadian Blood Services strives to create informative and engaging communities on social media. We ask that users heed our Community Guidelines

🩸 In honour of Sickle Cell Awareness Month, NotJustYou hosted our first-ever group blood donation on Saturday, September 21—and it was a powerful experience! We’re proud to share that our group consisted entirely of people of colour, which holds deep significance in the ongoing mission to support those living with Sickle Cell Disease. Blood transfusions are a vital treatment for many patients with Sickle Cell Disease, a condition that predominantly affects people of African, Caribbean, South Asian, and Middle Eastern descent. The unique challenge is that blood donors of similar ethnic backgrounds provide the most compatible blood matches for these patients, making the need for donors of ethnic ancestry especially critical. Canadian Blood Services continues to express the urgent need for more donors from diverse communities to ensure that all patients, especially those living with Sickle Cell Disease, receive the best possible care. We are incredibly proud of our group of donors who stepped up to help make a difference. This was just the beginning, and we hope to inspire many others to join this life-saving cause! 💉❤️ If you're able, consider becoming a donor and help us make a lasting impact on the lives of those who depend on it. #SickleCellAwarenessMonth

And that’s a wrap on Pride season 2024! 🌈  But our work to advance 2SLGBTQIA inclusion doesn’t stop there. Over the summer months, Canadian Blood Services was participated in many Pride events and festivals across the country – including in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Toronto, Victoria, London, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Calgary. Since the implementation of sexual behaviour-based screening in 2022, we’ve been attending Pride events to engage with 2SLGBTQIA community members, share updates on our ongoing efforts to advance 2SLGBTQIA inclusion, and deepen our understanding of people’s experiences with and perspectives about our organization. As a direct result of our recent apology to 2SLGBTQIA communities this past spring, we were also invited to march in Ottawa’s Pride parade for the first time. We were humbled to receive this invitation, given our history with gay, bi, queer, trans, Two-Spirit, and other sexual and gender diverse communities, and grateful to participate in all 2024 Pride events with many of our 2SLGBTQIA employees and allies. Canadian Blood Services has made strong commitments to foster 2SLGBTQIA inclusion across our organization and we’re dedicated to ongoing work to build trust and repair relationships with community. Appointment bookings at our blood and plasma donor centres across the country are not keeping pace with the rise in demand for blood products. Currently, only about 80 per cent of the available appointments are booked each week, leaving the national supply at risk of falling short as the summer rolls on and the supply dwindles. Patients are counting on people making the time to donate, to ensure a steady supply of blood and blood products. You can be part of the solution. If you’ve never donated before, there is no better time to start. If you are an existing donor, you can double your impact and help grow the community by inviting a new donor to join you when you make your appointment this summer. Book an appointment now at https://ow.ly/iKLR50Sqrg8

    • Rapid growth in the demand for blood products could cause national supply to dwindle
