At the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC), Juneteenth goes beyond its date of observance. In fact, the conversations behind the celebration continue — as we look to what is possible for African Americans, African Canadians, and the wider diaspora, when we work together. This is your reminder to join us at “Juneteenth Voices: Bridging Black Business Across Borders," a virtual celebration taking place on June 27, 2024, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. Juneteenth Voices will explore the intersections of Black entrepreneurship in Canada and the United States, and feature a dynamic panel discussion with representatives from the CBCC, the U.S. Black Chambers (USBC), and Babson College. The panel will include: • Words from CBCC Founder, Micheal Forrest, and Doug Minter, Sponsorship-Partnership Manager. • Remarks from Donna Levin, CEO of The Arthur M. Blank School for Entrepreneurial Leadership at Babson College and co-founder of Care.com. In 2022, a study by Black Professionals in Tech Network (BPTN) uncovered that Canada could be missing over 33,000 Black tech workers by 2024, and that’s in tech alone. The fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are growing rapidly, but they have historically—and disproportionately—been slow to attract and develop Black women. As a Toronto-based, nationally focused cultural chamber of commerce advocating on behalf of its network of Black-owned or Black-led businesses, we also understand the need to create a centre for innovation and shared success within our base of operation. This area of focus, which is part of CBCC’s purpose of creating “economic and trade development for the betterment of the Black diaspora and the Canadian economy,” will be facilitated by the newly appointed Toronto Innovation Hub Lead, Nikki Clarke! We had the honour of being an event sponsor for the Black Innovation in STEM (BIS) Summit: Testing the Future, presented by Nobellum last weekend. Held during pre-Collision weekend to showcase innovative startups and companies coming together to discuss the solutions of tomorrow, the summit featured fireside chats with Frank Baylis from Baylis Medical Technologies, Lisa Zarzeczny from Elevate; and Casey Lau and Katie Bolger from Web Summit, among many notable figures in tech. There were also periods to pitch, covering ideas to growth, and network. As a reminder, Nobellum’s mandate is to launch 100 Black-owned businesses in STEM by 2025.
