Project Spotlight: A Species at Risk (SAR) assessment was conducted in a heritage building at an Ontario museum, in response to a bat sighting during preparation for renovations. SAR Assessments are conducted by our ecological experts to identify protected species and habitats that may be impacted by project activities. These assessments help decision-makers evaluate whether a project can be carried out in accordance with applicable policies and regulations. Our Natural Sciences staff will often assist in securing permits and approvals from regulatory agencies to facilitate project implementation. Cambium conducted this SAR assessment in early September 2022, confirming the presence of five Little Brown Myotis bats, a provincially endangered species, in the attic of the building. This species favors long-term roosting sites and may return to a roosting site annually. Evidence of sign (i.e., guano) suggested a larger colony may have been occupying the building. Cambium recommended changes to the project schedule and carried out inspections after the bats' expected migration period (late September to early November), to confirm their absence. If future renovations are required, Ministry review and approval may be necessary to ensure compliance with regulation under the Endangered Species Act, 2007. #EndangeredSpecies #SAR

We were thrilled to take part in the Braestone Farm Endless Summer celebration on September 22 (before the mornings turned cool!). The one-day festival, along with its sister event, the Braestone Winter Classic Pond Hockey Tournament, is aiming to raise one million dollars for the Hudson Regional Cancer Centre located at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. #Community #Barrie #GuidingGoodDecisions

October is Circular Economy Month, and we are proud to showcase one of the ways we can take action! Recycling plays a key role in the circular economy. Instead of creating waste, products and materials are reused, repaired, or recycled, keeping valuable resources in circulation. Our CCIL Certified Lab uses plastic cylinders to test concrete. The cylinders need to be cut open after the concrete sets and subsequently cannot be reused. We tried to recycle them in the past, but it was more of a wish cycling exercise – we would send them away for recycling only to find out later that they were being discarded. Now we are no longer wish cycling! We now send the used cylinders back to a recycling company, EFS-plastics Inc., who has created a mold and is making new cylinders which they send back to us for use. A complete circle! #CircularEconomyMonth
