Accelerating neuroscience for brains at their best!
About us
Branch Out accelerates tech solutions and non-pharmaceutical approaches to neurological conditions. Through our grant program, we fund top neuroscientists exploring alternative brain research. Our vision? Accelerating neuroscience for brains at their best! We fund research that fits into the rigorous NeuroCAM (Neuroscience Complementary & Alternative Modalities) criteria. All research proposals are reviewed by our Scientific Review Panel to ensure it meets the highest quality of research methods and scientific measures. Since 2010, we’ve raised over $3.5 million for alternative brain research, funded over 110 research projects, and have expanded our University Grant Program across Canada. And we’re doing it with an open mind by "branching out" to fund alternative and tech solutions to neurological disorders. 🧠

We were thrilled to support Alessia Apa's research this summer, which explored the potential of Focused Ultrasound (FUS) as a non-invasive strategy to enhance oligodendrogenesis—critical for treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Currently, no approved therapies target oligodendrocyte lineage cells, making FUS a promising approach for expanding oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) populations and promoting brain repair. Alessia's work aims to fill this gap and to see if FUS could be a potential multimodal therapy for complex Alzheimer’s pathologies. By utilizing innovative techniques like FlashTag, her study hopes to advance our understanding of white matter health to be able to open new doors for future therapies. Stay tuned for her results! . . . #Alzheimers #AD #undergradgrant #undergradresearch #branchoutnf #flashtag #neuroresearch #newtech #neurotech #neuroCAM @sunnybrook Alessia Apa

Thank you PETRONAS Canada for participating in our Neuron Navigator Challenge as part of the Calgary Corporate Challenge—your involvement was fantastic, and your photos are amazing!
Earlier this week, we headed to the Calgary Curling Club to support team PETRONAS Canada in the Calgary Corporate Challenge finals and snapped a few photos in front of some iconic #YYC landmarks for Branch Out Neurological Foundation's #NeuronNavigator along the way! What a fun way to highlight this important organization and the work they're championing in our community 👏 We have had such a great time participating in the CCC Charity Challenge and September Games this year, and it's hard to believe we're already in the home stretch!

This is about the same as the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy. ✨ These neurons are connected by trillions of connections, or synapses. Experts call this a “neuron forest”. Information runs between these neurons in your brain for everything we see, think, or do. These neurons move information at different speeds. The fastest speed for information to pass between neurons is about 250 mph. That being said, neurons only make up 10% of the brain. . . . #didyouknow #neurons #neuronforest #brainfacts #branchoutnf #neurologicaldisorders

We're thrilled to announce our support for Martin Bardhi's research this summer at the University of Calgary, focusing on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a devastating neurological disease marked by the degeneration of motor neurons, leading to progressive muscle weakness and premature death. Intriguingly, ALS affects males more frequently and severely than females, a phenomenon that remains poorly understood. Martin's research builds on recent findings from the Sharkey and Nguyen labs, which have identified a reduction in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria in the gut of ALS patients, both male and female. These SCFAs play a crucial role in regulating gut barrier function, inflammation, and brain immune responses. By exploring whether replacing these SCFAs can alleviate ALS symptoms, Martin's work has the potential to unlock new therapeutic strategies for this currently incurable disease. We are excited to see where this promising research will lead! . . . #ALS #gutbrainconnection #neurologicaldisease #undergradgrant #neuroCAM #branchoutnf #neuroresearch University of Calgary
