Next week our founder and CEO, Dr. Kamran Khan, will join global experts to speak at the Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit 2024 hosted by CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations), FIOCRUZ - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, and Brazil’s Ministry of Health (Ministério da Saúde). The Summit will bring together global leaders from governments, international agencies, science and academia, industry, philanthropy, and civil society to explore how the world better prepares for future pandemics. Along with experts from Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc., Boston Children's Hospital, Fiocruz, and Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases (CEID), and moderated by Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, the panel will explore the innovations in infectious disease surveillance and how they can be effectively used to get ahead of outbreaks and protect public health. One week ago, the National Institute Of Virology - India (NIV) confirmed that the recent death of a 4-year-old girl in the northeastern state of Gujarat was due to Chandipura virus. Then, just 5 days later, NIV would go on to report a total of 84 cases, including 32 deaths. Chandipura virus is a relatively unknown virus with death occurring in approx. 60% of detected cases. And with no vaccine or antiviral treatment available, its resurgence is of high concern. Our latest edition of Outbreak Insider takes an in-depth look at this evasive virus, and how governments and their agencies on all continents can act to prevent further spread. One of this year's largest global mass gatherings, the Summer Olympic Games, will kick off this Friday bringing risk for the transmission of both existing and new infectious diseases. Mass gatherings have the potential to significantly amplify the spread of diseases among travelers who typically would not interact. While no two events are the same, the key risk areas can be broken into three high-level areas: 👉 Diseases with immediate transmission risks 👉 High Consequence but Sporadically Reported Diseases 👉 Diseases with risk of long-term establishment However, our experience has shown that risk assessments must consider multiple contributing factors that provide a comprehensive context. This is why we have put together this brief report, which highlights key considerations for assessing risk at mass gatherings. Our Surveillance team has released another alert on the developing oropouche virus infection situation in Cuba. First reported by BlueDot on May 28, 2024, the oropouche virus is a little-known arbovirus transmitted by mosquitoes and midges in the tropical regions of Latin America. However, due to its similar presentation at onset to dengue, and other arboviral illnesses, it is frequently under-reported and undiagnosed, thus spreading largely unchecked. To date there have now been 8 cases total reported in Italy and Spain from travellers returning from Cuba, and more recently from Brazil, suggesting that there is an increasing risk of international spread. There are also reports of the first potential deaths associated with oropouche which are currently under investigation. We did a deep dive into this mysterious virus and the potential ramifications of its presence in our recent Outbreak Insider newsletter. You can also access other relevant disease deep dives by accessing our most recent issue on Zika by signing up for free! Last week, Pakistan finally uncovered the truth behind the 2021 mysterious outbreak — Zika. But the relief of finally identifying the source of these cases, soon made way for the realization of the greater public health implications. It is now believed that Zika has likely been the underlying cause of multiple outbreaks of a previously unknown febrile illness, and flew under the radar as a result of limited surveillance and laboratory capacities. Tracked closely by BlueDot for around 3 years, this discovery has greater implications for the spread of Zika and the harm it is wrecking upon people globally. This summer we're seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases in the northern hemisphere. Driven by descendants of the now dominant JN.1 variant, the worst offenders include KP.2, KP.3, and JN.1.7.1 which are part of the Furin-like cleavage site, L452R, and T478K group — otherwise known as FLiRT. Because testing is limited, it's difficult to fully understand the impact of the new FLiRT sublineages. Previously we reported that the JN.1 variant showed signs of being more immune evasive, but it is still unknown whether the FLiRT group will be the same. These continuous mutations are a major challenge for public health, governments, and pharmaceutical organizations, as they struggle to stay on top of changing peaks and wave trends, and provide adequate updated vaccines.
