July 1st marks the 157th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, most commonly known as “Canada Day”. For many, this is a time of celebration, but for others, this a time to reflect on the local and global impact of this nation’s existence: What does it mean to be Canadian? As a country with a diverse population, we must stand together to create a future to the benefit of all. We can have gratitude, while understanding that more is required. A country that was founded through colonization must continue to work with and address the harms caused to the original caretakers of this land, while engaging in principled efforts to move forward in a good way for everyone. This is why we believe in the investment of our communities, because it is in our communities where we find resilience, dedication and hope. Together, we can learn, challenge and build a society that celebrates our accomplishments and improves our conditions. Let us use this day not only to celebrate our accomplishments but also to reflect, listen to the voices of those whose stories have been hidden, and learn from their experiences. When we engage with others, different from us, with curiosity and openness, we pave the way towards unity. Reconciliation is an action, and we all can take part. Happy Canada Day! #BlackCanada #CanadaDay #ourhomeonnativeland

The BOF Team wishes you a safe and happy Pride! This year’s theme, "Be…," encourages everyone to embrace their true selves, focusing on living authentically and loving who we choose to love. Regardless of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, or gender identity, everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Pride is a celebration of the love, joy, and resilience of 2SLGBTQ communities across the country, with a rich history worth exploring. The Stonewall Uprising in New York in 1969 was the catalyst for the Pride movement, and Toronto's Pride Week evolved out of the mass protests that followed the 1981 Toronto bathhouse raids. These protests sparked ongoing campaigns for equal rights and representation of queer, trans, and gender non-conforming people. We are fortunate to have the annual opportunity to uplift and recognize the invaluable contributions made by Black Queer and Trans people across Turtle Island. Black 2SLGBTQ individuals have been at the centre of significant changes that have ushered in many of the present privileges we all benefit from today. However, many continue to face multiple layers of discrimination based on intersecting identities, including race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, national origin, socio-economic status, and more. BOF believes that whenever any group in our society is deprived of the opportunity to achieve their full potential, it negatively impacts our society as a whole. Even a single organization can become a vehicle for change. Founded in 1984 by activists Debbie Douglas, Douglas Stewart, Courtnay McFarlane, Sylmadel Coke, and Deryck Gloden, Zami was Canada's first organization for Black gay and lesbian people of Caribbean descent. In its short existence, Zami paved the way for many organizations, including Aya, the Black Lesbian and Gay Action Group, the Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention (Black CAP), and Blackness Yes!, which continue to create safer spaces for Black 2SLGBTQ communities to this day. As we celebrate Pride, let's remember and honour the organizations and trailblazers who have pushed us forward. Be proud, Be resilient, and Be you. #BOFBacksPride #BE #Pride2024

National Indigenous History Month is a time for healing, reflection, education, and celebration. It is dedicated to honoring and amplifying the voices, cultures, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. It is a time for us to reflect, recognize the truth of our shared history, and honor the myriad contributions of Indigenous peoples across various fields. With strength and resilience, leadership and artistry, Indigenous peoples have maintained strong and vibrant nations, shaped society, and inspired and influenced generations. Today, June 21st, is also National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time dedicated to educating ourselves about the Indian Act, Residential Schools, Day Schools, and the Sixties Scoop. Understanding these historical events is essential for fostering reconciliation. This day is a call to raise awareness of the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples today. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has laid out a comprehensive roadmap for healing and justice across Canadian society. We urge you to read the TRC Calls to Action and consider how you can incorporate them into your daily life. Today serves as a reminder to renew our collective commitment to understanding and learning about our nation's history. The colonial legacy and systemic discrimination still deeply entrenched in our society cannot be ignored. It is our responsibility to address and dismantle these injustices. Let National Indigenous Peoples Day inspire change, as we continue the vital work of fostering respect, healing, and unity. Together, we can shape a brighter future where the wealth of Indigenous cultures is honored, and their contributions are fully recognized and celebrated. Sickle cell disease disproportionately impacts individuals of African descent, leading to debilitating pain and financial hardship for many families. Addressing the disparate health outcomes for Black people in Canada, is one of Black Opportunity Fund (BOF)’s top priorities, and so on this World Sickle Cell Day, we are excited to share updates on our continued collaboration with SickKids Foundation as we work together to improve outcomes for children being treated for the Sickle Cell Disease. We're thrilled to announce that the groundbreaking SickKids-developed technology, the Capsule Shredder, is now in the hands of children with sickle cell disease and their families and is having a significant impact. 329 children and their families have received the Capsule Shredder this year. This incredible device has proven to be a game-changer, enabling easier and safer at-home treatment for children battling sickle cell disease, while reducing potential adverse effects, for both the children and their caregivers. Black Opportunity Fund has funded the development and production of the Capsule Shredders as well as the free distribution of the devices through all 13 Canadian children’s hospitals, to every child in Canada being treated for the Sickle Cell Disease over the next 4 years. Here is a heartfelt quote from a SickKids mom highlighting the important impact the Capsule Shredder has had in helping her child navigate his journey with treatment for Sickle Cell Disease: “When Daniel started Hydroxyurea in 2012, the shredder wasn't available. I had to open the medication capsule and mix it with water. I used a syringe to administer the medication, and I had to pour the leftovers into a container and return it to the pharmacy for disposal. This method was very difficult. I wish the Capsule Shredder was available when Daniel was younger. I am so happy that families now have this tool to make it easier to administer medication.” Black Opportunity Fund also established a Sickle Cell Disease Patient Amenities Fund at SickKids Hospital. This past year, the return generated from the endowment fund was used to help distribute the Capsule Shredders to families in need. We are extremely pleased at the impact the Capsule Shredder is already having. And this is just the beginning – SickKids researchers are exploring the feasibility for the device to be used for other medications – creating even greater impact. The Capsule Shredder could also be distributed internationally, potentially to Sub-Saharan Africa, where they have the highest rate of sickle cell disease in the world. You can support this fund by donating at blackopportunityfund.ca. Your contribution will directly impact the lives of these young warriors, as they and their families battle this debilitating disease. #WeBackBlack #BlackHealthMatters #WorldSickleCellDay #SickleCellAwareness
