Congratulations to all of the ventures that participated in the 2024 YSpace & Black Entrepreneurship Alliance Food & Beverage Accelerator Pitch Day on Tuesday, September 24! The event’s objective was to foster the pitching experience for food ventures. Panelists included industry partners, program alumni, investors and advisors. Participating ventures pitched for 3-5 minutes, followed by feedback and industry insight from panelists. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Impact Gala, hosted by the Federation of Black Canadians and Skills For Life Inc! 🥳 A night filled with powerful moments of networking, entertainment, and celebrating Black excellence through awards and recognition. I left feeling inspired by the incredible individuals who are truly making an impact within our community! When I first arrived in Canada, I was eager to embrace its rich diversity. Confident that I would easily find Nigerian groceries, I assured my mother I didn’t need to pack a market’s worth of food. To my surprise, I grew tired of poutine and started craving the familiar tastes of home. Finding Nigerian products became a frustrating challenge. Although, in university, through word of mouth, I got to know of only one store and apparently so did everyone else, because of this the products in the store was often out of stock and expensive. It wasn’t until a year later that I found another store with more options, at half the price. This lack of visibility for ethnic stores highlighted a real problem that also pertains to other cultures. So, I put my skills to the test by launching a website with a waitlist highlighting a solution, this quickly gained over 200 sign-ups. Motivated by the response, I teamed up with Dexter E., Kamsi Idimogu, and Justina Ackah to create a solution. With my recently concluded graduation this summer, I've had enough time to build and I am thrilled to announce the launch of the pilot version of QuiikMart! 🎉 This current version allows you to see the local ethnic stores around you. In the near future you will be able to shop directly on the app. Here's to connecting cultures and making the world a little smaller through the love of food! More importantly, I want to thank God for making all this possible.
