CICE proudly partnered with Carbon Removal Canada to deliver their inaugural Centering Indigenous Leadership & Community Voices workshop on September 12, an event that brought together Indigenous leaders, community members, and industry experts to discuss responsible and respectful carbon removal deployment. 🌟 CICE's own Chantelle Carden moderated a panel with Robert Napoli (Cascadia Seaweed), Mike Kelland (Planetary), and Thomas Storwick (Coastal Carbon), discussing progress and learnings in their community-engaged projects. Highlights included the importance of continuous engagement and relationship-building with First Nations and Indigenous communities, the desire for Indigenous ownership and control over projects in their territories, and the need for patience and thorough study, respecting the pace of the communities. 🤝🌱 "We are in the early stages of CDR development, and this is an opportunity to build a strong foundation for the industry. Sharing experiences and storytelling is a powerful way to move the CDR industry forward in a meaningful and equitable way." - Chantelle Carden, Carbon Management Lead at CICE Learn more about this insightful event, including the Kairos Blanket Exercise, which set the foundation for the workshop and provided historical context on Indigenous peoples and First Nations communities. This transformative exercise highlighted how society can improve and do better. Four key takeaways: 🔹Do your research and check capacity before you approach, 🔹Enter conversations with respect, 🔹Don't go into a discussion with an expected outcome, and 🔹Real partnership and sovereignty are essential. Thank you entrepreneurship@UBC for a great first day of Immersion Week 2024!🌟 This event highlighted the need for collaboration in the space and to always keep in mind who will be impacted by the work you are doing when making key decisions. 🤝 CICE's Omar Mawji joined an insightful panel discussion on Bridging the Innovation Gap with Funding and Resources. The panel included Anoush Poursartip, Co-Director of the Department of Materials Engineering at The University of British Columbia, Marcelo Mora, Senior Advisor at Innovate BC and Mitacs, Richard Sones, Director, Partner Innovations at The University of British Columbia's BioProducts Institute, and was moderated by Sean Lumb, Associate Director at entrepreneurship@UBC . 💡 The discussion focused on how to support innovators transitioning from universities to scaling their innovations. Key points included teaching founders how to secure funding, navigate different forms of support and valuing industry expertise alongside financial needs. Some other takeaways included the importance of taking more risks and reducing pressure on early-stage companies. 🚀

Thank you to pH7 Technologies and Cespira for hosting our team members, Todd Sayers, Raymond Tang, and Evan Horvath, EIT, at your facilities yesterday! The team really enjoyed gaining a deeper understanding of how our investments are advancing these solutions and the challenges these companies face beyond the funded projects. 👷♂️💡 pH7's Mohammad Doostmohammadi led us on a tour of their demo and pilot plants while explaining how their mining decarbonization efforts have improved mine production costs for their customers and how they're tackling copper recovery for mines worldwide.🌎 We were also impressed by the compressor development at Cespira (formerly Westport) to maximize HPDI technology potential for reducing transport emissions. The Cespira team was also excited about having their demonstration project set up and proving a 95% emissions reduction with high-pressure hydrogen injection. 💧 Transport and mining emissions reductions are possible! 🚛⛏
