The BCCA is a community-based org dedicated to combating the structural inequities created by anti-black racism.

About us

The BC Community Alliance (BCCA) is a local Black-led, community-based organization, formed in 2019, and registered as a non-profit in 2020. We are dedicated to addressing the structural inequities created by racism, especially anti-Black racism, within education settings in British Columbia. BCCA was born out of a crisis in our community, following a racist bomb threat at a Vancouver high school, Lord Byng Secondary, and recognizing the broad harm that occurred not only to Black students in the school, but also felt within the broader community, especially other Black community members. Although the 'Lord Byng incident' was a foundational moment in the formation of the BC Alliance, and we are more accurately understood as a response to the racism that is felt by many racialized students throughout the province. The founding members of the BC Community Alliance include Marie Tate of Speak Up Youth Forums; Tasha Clarke of the Unity Centre Association for Black Cultures; Adam Rudder, formerly of Hogan’s Alley Society; and Brian Seremba of the Ugandan Cultural Association of B.C. Markiel Simpson, an executive of the BC Young New Democrats (BC YND) and member of the Global Shapers Community, later joined and has become an additional member of our Steering Committee - which is the driving force behind BCCA’s initiatives to date. There have also been several like-minded community organizations and individual members, activists, working professionals, and talented volunteers who have supported and contributed to the early development of BCCA and continue to play a role in ongoing efforts. From its inception, BCCA has embraced the core principles of persistence, passion for meaningful change, and dedication to justice in establishing the foundation of our advocacy work.

Exciting news! ✨🎓 BC Community Alliance is honored to work with RBC once more to support their scholarship program✨ They are tripling the support👏🏾 One of our amazing students from our Support for Student Learning Program took home the prestigious RBC Future Launch Scholarship last year, which came with an incredible $40,000 to help with their academic endeavors! 🏅 This year, we are excited to announce that we have three more spots available to award a total of $120,000 in scholarships to deserving students from our spring and fall cohorts! 🌟 These scholarships provide up to $10,000 per year to help students with tuition, living expenses, mentorship, and career planning over a four-year period. Thank you, RBC for extending our support program with this award opportunity for a second year! Our students want to be lawyers, engineers, doctors, pharmacists and architectures📈 This week at our Support for Student Learning Program, we learned about investing 101, which they thoroughly enjoyed! We still have spots available, and the scholarship nomination process will be launched on our new platform, Komino which serves as our student's digital community hub. #winning #nextgenleaders #scholarship #preparation #tech

As I reflect a few days before my birthday 🎂 🥳 approaches this week. I’m so thankful for an awesome summer😎☀️ where I had the opportunity to attend events and work on some exciting products with the team, and volunteers at BC Community Alliance. Firstly, we have been working on some really exciting products and services to sustain and expand our work. We have signed a slew of new clients through the soft launch of our advisory services arm (Looking for a grant writing or program implementation team?). Secondly, this week as I celebrate my birthday, and reflect on my life as a newcomer, now local😅in Canada, I’m really looking forward to going to Halifax🛫 in the fall for the Black Businness Conference, shout out to Black Business Initiative for the support☺️ Thirdly, we just kicked off our Support For Student Learning fall cohort and we already at 50% enrolled with no ad spend, winning 🏆(thanks social media and email marketing). In our 2024 spring cohort, we learned: 2 out of 3 students rated the program 5 ⭐️ , with 83% finding it highly engaging🧑🏾💻👩🏾💻. Key topics included entrepreneurship: Product Management and navigating the educational system as a Black youth. Our advisory services ensures we can keep this program accessible for students at no cost!! Lastly, we are releasing tickets to our inaugural gala fundraiser on October 1st (November 16th official date). We are so excited for the sponsors who are going to be joining us for a night of community excellence! Thank you to FortisBC, Hogan's Alley Society, Lonetree, Earnest Ice Cream, and VIFF so far as our event sponsors! 🌟 Big Moves for BC’s Black Community! 🌟 We are extremely excited to share key points from Premier Eby's recent speech on empowering the Black community in BC! We discussed the following topics and concerns that can strengthen the inclusive needs for the Black community's involvement in society as a whole. 🔹 Opportunities in Leadership: Stressed the importance of having more representation of Black individuals in elected positions, board memberships, and public sector roles to ensure diverse perspectives are heard. 🔹 Support for Newcomers: Due to the substantial increase in population from foreign countries, there is an ongoing necessity to assist newcomers in feeling welcomed and integrated. 🔹 Improved Funding: Recognizing the difficulties faced by non-profit organizations, with a specific focus on housing and procurement to ensure long-lasting support. 🔹 Legislative Advancements: The implementation of the Anti-Racism Data Act and Anti-Racism Legislation act is aimed at raising awareness and continuing the battle against systemic racism. 🔹 Reform in Education: Advocating for the inclusion of a mandatory provincial Black curriculum to provide education and inspiration. 🔹 Cultural Initiatives: Plans for the establishment of a new cultural center and ongoing collaboration with community leaders to promote a lively cultural exchange. Let's continue to show our support for these initiatives and strive for real change! Join us in shaping a more inclusive future for our community. #BCCA #CommunityEmpowerment #BlackLivesMatter 📅 Stay tuned for further updates and get involved!
