The BCCA is a community-based org dedicated to combating the structural inequities created by anti-black racism.

About us

The BC Community Alliance (BCCA) is a local Black-led, community-based organization, formed in 2019, and registered as a non-profit in 2020. We are dedicated to addressing the structural inequities created by racism, especially anti-Black racism, within education settings in British Columbia. BCCA was born out of a crisis in our community, following a racist bomb threat at a Vancouver high school, Lord Byng Secondary, and recognizing the broad harm that occurred not only to Black students in the school, but also felt within the broader community, especially other Black community members. Although the 'Lord Byng incident' was a foundational moment in the formation of the BC Alliance, and we are more accurately understood as a response to the racism that is felt by many racialized students throughout the province. The founding members of the BC Community Alliance include Marie Tate of Speak Up Youth Forums; Tasha Clarke of the Unity Centre Association for Black Cultures; Adam Rudder, formerly of Hogan’s Alley Society; and Brian Seremba of the Ugandan Cultural Association of B.C. Markiel Simpson, an executive of the BC Young New Democrats (BC YND) and member of the Global Shapers Community, later joined and has become an additional member of our Steering Committee - which is the driving force behind BCCA’s initiatives to date. There have also been several like-minded community organizations and individual members, activists, working professionals, and talented volunteers who have supported and contributed to the early development of BCCA and continue to play a role in ongoing efforts. From its inception, BCCA has embraced the core principles of persistence, passion for meaningful change, and dedication to justice in establishing the foundation of our advocacy work.

Moore Edgar Lyster LLP is thrilled to report that our very own Afifa Hashimi recently received the Canadian Bar Association’s Douglas Miller Rising Star award at a ceremony held in Gatineau QC on June 5, 2024. The award recognizes early career lawyers who exhibit professional excellence, service to the profession, and outstanding dedication and team spirit in their involvement with the CBA. The CBA recognized Afifa as “one of British Columbia's best known human rights lawyers” and for her leadership with numerous organizations and initiatives. Among those organizations was another honoree, the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers BC, which received the Touchstone Award for advancing equality in the legal profession, and for its award-winning documentary, But I Look Like a Lawyer, of which Afifa was an associate producer. We’ve long known Afifa was a star, and are pleased that the profession is taking note as well. https://lnkd.in/gZJEZ8pQ

✨ We have a new partner! ✨ We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership between the Pacific National Exihibition (PNE) and BC Community Alliance (BCCA)! For the youth in our Support for Student Learning Program (SSLP), this partnership creates wonderful summer employment opportunities. With no prior work experience required for these positions—a testament to PNE's dedication to accessible employment—they represent a great place for many young people to start their careers. A huge thank you to Hetty L. and Dania k for making this connection possible! Your assistance in connecting BCCA with PNE has opened the door for a partnership that will greatly assist the young people in our community by giving them the chance at summer jobs as well as priceless life experiences. We are looking forward to seeing how this partnership benefits our students and are excited about the possibilities for the future. Stay tuned as we continue to collaborate to remove barriers and create employment opportunities that empower our youth and strengthen communities. #BCCA #PNE #YouthEmpowerment #CommunityImpact #InclusiveEmployment #Partnership #ThankYou

We were able to cover the costs of our SSLP students from rural communities attending the Afro World Expo this weekend🔥 Kudos to the Black Business Association of BC's sponsorship! I am deeply grateful to Nerissa Allen and her team for generously supporting our booth and mission to empower Black youth. As you can see in the photo, we are having a great time. I can not believe who won the Jollof Competition, but that is a topic for another day😂🤣. Check us out below.

This past weekend, I attended the Black Entrepreneurs & Businesses of Canada Society (BEBC)'s Black Business Summit and was blown away by the incredible entrepreneurs making a huge impact in our communities across Canada and the world 🌎. Thank you to Jackee Kasandy, Candace Lauren and the rest of the team for organizing this Summit. Thank you also for sponsoring Mutima Canada’s participation in the procurement program for facilitating meetings with our future partners from the Procurement teams at The University of British Columbia, RBC, and TELUS Procurement teams. With our non-diluted seed capital by the Black Business Initiative, we will be introducing an RTD Energy beverage to the market while also providing newcomers with integrated work learning opportunities that is centred on community. Thanks for all the advice Paul Brassard. It was invaluable ✨ Also thank you Courtney Formosa for explaining the procurement process for RBC. Game changer📈 The pitch competition began with the grand prize of $25,000 for first place. However, the night ended with a total of $80,000 in funds raised through Craig Wellington and the Black Opportunity Fund who awarded the 2nd place winner with $25,000!🤯 Entrepreneurs in our community also generously awarded the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place winners $7500 each 🔥🔥🔥. Honestly, you had to be there. The event was absolutely amazing! A night out was planned to celebrate the winners of the pitch competition. See the selfie of us at the Gastown Steam Clock 😊 BC Community Alliance was also on the ground to introduce our Safe School Hub waitlist (We are offering $250 to a lucky winner who signs up here: https://lnkd.in/g_cgqtpc). BCCA also brought two students from our Support for Student Learning Program, who engaged the attendees by sharing our exciting new platform (currently in development). Thank you to our partners at the municipal, provincial, federal, corporate and foundation levels who’ve provided funding, capacity and so much more to support our expansion plans. We are currently developing our circular framework model (Loading). Congratulations to the pitch competition winners.
