#BCFNews Construction is officially underway at Damen Shipyards Galati for two of the four new battery-electric hybrid Island Class vessels. Another leap forward in #BCFerries fleet renewal strategy, and our ongoing commitment to modernizing our fleet, enhancing service, and promoting environmental sustainability. Key features and benefits of the new Island Class vessels include: 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲: each vessel will accommodate nearly 47 vehicles and 400 passengers, providing greater service capacity and comfort for our customers. 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: designed to operate on renewable BC Hydro electricity, these vessels will significantly reduce our environmental footprint, supporting the Province’s CleanBC goals and bringing us closer to our 2030 targets by reducing emissions by 10,000 tons of CO2 equivalent. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: the new design will streamline crew operations, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness by having similar technology and protocols across the fleet. 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬: the updated propulsion system will reduce underwater radiated noise, ensuring quieter operations – benefiting marine life and enhancing the overall passenger experience. The new Island Class vessels will service the Nanaimo Harbour - Gabriola Island route and the Campbell River - Quadra Island route, with plans for fleet redeployment to address capacity constraints on the Crofton - Vesuvius route, Quadra Island - Cortes Island route and the Denman Island - Hornby Island route. This project will result in significant capacity increases and improved travel certainty, particularly during refit periods. We remain committed to delivering a superior travel experience while upholding our responsibility to the environment. Set to begin arriving in BC in 2026, these new vessels will enhance our service capabilities and support the coastal communities we serve. Learn more: https://ow.ly/p7IW50SCuGP

#BCFNews As the 2024 wildfire season approaches, we're enhancing our support for emergency responders with a streamlined booking process, expedited loading and priority boarding for those aiding wildfire responses in BC and across Canada. Developed in partnership with the BC Wildfire Service, this new process will ensure emergency vehicles, crews and support staff have timely and reliable ferry access during the busy summer travel season. BC Ferries has historically provided assured loading for crews deployed to fight wildfires. However, with record numbers of travellers expected on board this summer, the new process for emergency responders in active pursuit of a wildfire will ensure they get on the right vessel, at the right time. Wildfire prevention is everyone's responsibility. Many areas along the BC Coast are currently experiencing extremely dry conditions. Visit the BC Wildfire Service website and check with your municipality for current fire bans, restrictions, and regulations in these areas 👉 ow.ly/oYSz50SxylA By working together and staying vigilant, we can protect our communities and ensure a safe summer for everyone. #WorldEnvironmentDay 🌎 This month, along the coast, 22 teams comprised of hundreds of our people at #BCFerries are participating in the #ShorelineCleanup. Over the past four years, BC Ferries teams have removed over 6,000 kg of debris from the coast. Today, on #WorldEnvironmentDay, you might see the Tsawwassen shoreline cleanup crew in action! The theme for World Environment Day is #GenerationRestoration, focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Through initiatives like the shoreline cleanup, we’re working together to protect the land and waterways where we’re privileged to work and call home. Government of British Columbia has officially declared May 28 as Menstrual Health Day as of today! 🎉 What an amazing step towards menstrual equity in our province. #MHDay is a global advocacy awareness day to create a world where no one is held back because they menstruate. Poor menstrual health caused by persisting taboos and stigma, limited access to menstrual products and poor sanitation infrastructure undermines the educational opportunities, health and overall social status of women, girls, Trans and non-binary people around the world, and right here in BC as well. A local Period Promise public survey respondent feels discouraged by the ongoing stigma and the excessive costs. “It's so frustrating that resources that could possibly help me with this are crazy expensive and it makes it feel like living through your period and being comfortable is somehow a privilege, when it should be a right.” United Way BC is committed to improving access to period products. There’s still time to donate to our Period Promise campaign! www.uwbc.ca/periodpromise #UnitedWayBC #PeriodPoverty #PeriodPromise #MHDay2024 #PeriodFriendlyWorld Kelli Paddon

As one of the largest ferry operators in the world we recognize our responsibility to ensure our operations and products, along with the supply chains that support them, adhere to the highest ethical standards, including the prevention and identification of forced labour and child labour in our supply chain. We maintain a strict stance against forced labour and child labour across all aspects of our operation and supply chain. One way we achieve this is by mandating vendors to adhere to the Supplier Code of Conduct which emphasizes the importance of workers’ rights, mandates measures to mitigate the risks of human trafficking and monitoring of compliance with labour and human rights laws. All tenders in the last 24 months have been reviewed and compared to a published list of goods that may be produced by child labour or forced labour. Tender documents and supplier contracts have been updated to explicitly require vendors, their employees and sub-contractors to comply with all laws, statues, regulations and codes related to anti-slavery and human trafficking. Our procurement team receives training and audits current practices to enable the exploration of additional measures to prevent forced labour or child labour in our supply chain. Pursuant to the Fighting Against the Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act, we have filed a report that identifies the measures we have taken to prevent and reduce the risk that forced labour or child labour is used at any step in our supply chain as well as additional measures to monitor potential risks. To date, no forced labour or child labour has been identified. Learn more: https://ow.ly/wvuf50RRChE

In 2022, the International Maritime Organization launched #WomenInMaritimeDay, which takes place annually on May 18th. The day highlights the importance of empowering women in the maritime sector and celebrates their invaluable contributions to the industry and our global community. Despite progress toward gender equality in the maritime industry, women remain underrepresented. Promoting the recruitment, retention, and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector is critical to our future. This year’s theme focuses on the crucial role of women in ensuring maritime safety worldwide while highlighting the changing attitudes toward gender in the industry. Today, we celebrate all of the incredible women at #BCFerries and #WomenInMaritime across the globe who are shaping the future of maritime safety. Thank you for your dedication and leadership. #BCFerries is proud to support the Moose Hide Campaign, an Indigenous-led movement focused on ending gender-based violence. We're joining thousands of Canadians wearing pins today to support #MooseHide Campaign Day and our commitment to reconciliation and safe communities. The #MooseHideCampaign is grounded in Indigenous ceremony and traditional ways of learning and healing. Wearing the moose hide pin signifies a commitment to honour, respect, and protect the women and children in your life and speak out against gender-based and domestic violence. The movement started in BC over 10 years ago and has distributed over 4 million campaign pins across Canada.
