With the many wildfires burning across Western Canada and the North, it is another difficult summer for the communities we serve with electricity and natural gas services. One of those communities is the Town of Jasper, Alberta. For decades, ATCO has been a part of Jasper as an energy supplier and community partner. On behalf of our people at ATCO, we are devastated by the aggressive fires that came through the town of Jasper last night. We care deeply about this community and everyone who has been impacted. Before evacuating yesterday at approximately 4:00 p.m., ATCO operators turned off the natural gas distribution service to the town and isolated the natural gas transmission line at a valve just south of the Athabasca River. Power remained on in the community to continue electric supply to support the firefighting efforts, but later that afternoon, power to the town was ultimately disrupted. Until we are able to safely re-enter the community to complete a full assessment, we won’t know the extent of the damage to our infrastructure. Our sincere appreciation goes to the courageous responders who remained overnight to continue fighting the fires and deepest condolences to those who have lost their homes and businesses.
