The fifth Placemaking Canada national gathering will take place September 6-7, 2024, in Montréal, Quebec, on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka (Mohawk) Nation. From vibrant summertime pedestrian streets to green lanes, from exciting new gathering areas to transformative cultural spaces, Quebec’s largest city is also at the forefront of placemaking in Canada! The gathering will provide an opportunity for placemakers to meet one another, visit some of the amazing public space initiatives across Montreal, and discuss the future of placemaking in Canada. Activities will include walk/bike tours and site visits, dialogue sessions and collaborative workshops. The ticket fees are low to ensure the event is accessible. Bursary tickets are available. KECC Studio Day 3 Recap! The third and final day of the KECC Studio was focused on implementation and taking action. We spent the day at It's OK* Studios, an independent Black-led and operated multipurpose arts space, where we heard from 8 80 Cities' founder and chair Gil Penalosa who shared how to take action on creating cities for everyone. We wrapped the day together reflecting on our experience and sharing key takeaways. Thank you to all the speakers over these past few days for providing inspiration to us all. KECC Studio Day 2 Recap! The theme for Saturday was all about drawing inspiration from Toronto and being a champion. Our friends from Helpful Places kicked the day off with part 2 of their civic tech workshop, finishing the morning off with a presentation from renowned placemaker and author Jay Pitter on inclusive placemaking principles. In the afternoon, we travelled to the Mashkikii;aki'ing Garden for a session with Na Me Res on reclaiming traditional approaches to food security, health and healing. We then travelled to Little Jamaica to learn about care, connection and empowering civic innovation from members of Reset and "Stolen from Africa" founder Neil 'Logik' Donaldson. Time flies real fast! Reflecting on an incredible year as a Change Maker fills me with immense pride and gratitude. The journey has not only been an invaluable learning experience, it pushed me to step out, take action, and make a difference. As the co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer at NL Eats Community Outreach Inc., I’ve always been passionate about driving positive change, but the OCC program has expanded my vision further to take on new challenges. With the support and energy of the community, I have been able to start the S.O.C.I.A.L. (Supporting Outreach and Community Involvement for Active Living) initiative. The collaborations and partnerships with community organizations such as the CRC Rideau-Rockcliffe CRC, RMIT University, Arizona State University, University of Ottawa and Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador have been instrumental. Working alongside like-minded individuals and organizations has not only brought new perspectives to the table but has also shown me the power of collective effort in bringing a vision to life. The grant from 8 80 Cities was a crucial catalyst, turning ideas into action, and I'm grateful for their belief in the mission. Being a Change Maker is about more than just initiating projects; it's about fostering a mindset that seeks to create equitable and inclusive spaces where everyone has access to resources. This year has been a testament to the fact that with the right support, energy, and creativity, real change is possible. A heartfelt thank you to the team at 880 Cities Shannon Lawrence, Amanda O'Rourke for providing the platform and resources, and to all the Change Makers and amazing people who’ve supported and believed in the vision. This is just the beginning, and I’m excited to continue this journey of making a lasting socioeconomic impact. Let’s continue the conversation and drive the change our communities need. As we work on creating change in our communities we need to remember that Real Change takes time, but every effort, no matter how small or big, is a step toward a better tomorrow.
