That's a wrap!🎬 Last Thursday marked the official end of the 2024 #HealthyUrbanPolicy Implementation Workshop in Copenhagen funded by Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada. We heard from Katrine Schjønning, Chief of Public Health in the Municipality of Copenhagen and Cycling Without Age founder, Ole Kassow. The final task we had for the participants was to brainstorm and present what inspiration and ideas they will be bringing back to support their projects in their home cities. For our more adventurous participants the day ended with a refreshing jump in the Harbour! 🌊 We hope this has been a transformative learning experience for all of you and can't wait to see what you accomplish! 👩⚕️The theme for Day 3 of the #HealthyUrbanPolicy Workshop was healthy & inclusive neighbourhoods. We started the day outside BLOXHUB where participants engaged in some much needed play time before heading inside to hear from SLA Architects, Cities for Better Health & artist Kenneth Balfelt! We then travelled by bus to Tingbjerg to hear about building healthy and cohesive communities and diabetes treatment & prevention. The Healthy Urban Policy Implementation Workshop is a program designed to bring together city/community leaders and researchers together towards a common goal: improving health & well-being in their home cities. Through a week of inspiring talks and tours from Copenhagen’s city staff, architects, service providers and community leaders, participants gain an understanding of promising policies and practices related to public space and active transportation that make Copenhagen one of the healthiest & happiest places in the world. At the end of the workshop, participants develop action plans for implementing their learnings from Copenhagen back home. 🚶♀️Day 2 of the #HealthyUrbanPolicy Workshop was all about creating cities for people! We kicked off the day with a presentation from the City of Copenhagen on creating a more healthy and sustainable city, before touring the inner harbour and inspiring community space, Abasalon. We finished up the day with a walking tour with Gehl then a group dinner at Høst which truly encapsulated the Danish concept of "hygge".🕯️ The Healthy Urban Policy Implementation Workshop is a program intended to bring together city/community leaders and researchers together towards a common goal: improving health & well-being in their home cities. On September 30th, we honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, a day dedicated to reflecting on the painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools in Canada. This day is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about and acknowledge the truth about the experiences of Indigenous peoples and the children who never returned home and to support survivors and their families. Through education, reflection, and action, we commit to better understanding our shared history, as this is fundamental to building a more inclusive and respectful future for all. As an organization, we are committed to ongoing learning and unlearning. We are taking these steps as we learn more and incorporate specific actions to work in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and reconciliation through the work we do: 🔸We are prioritizing work with Indigenous-led programming in our public space activations. 🔸We have integrated cultural awareness training and workshops into our internal professional development, capacity-building, and fellowship programs. 🔸We are building relationships with Indigenous organizations and partners based on reciprocity and compensating Indigenous partners for their contributions on their terms. Our organization’s rights-based framework has been strengthened based on ongoing learning and teachings with Indigenous partners that emphasize the importance of responsibility. While our mission is centred on a people-first approach, we understand the interconnectedness of all living things and that the health of the land, water and air around us and our cities is quintessential to our very survival. Our updated 8 80 Cities framework includes the following: 🔸The Right to Public Space- everyone has the right to welcoming and accessible public spaces. 🔸The Right to Mobility- everyone has the right to safe and active mobility. 🔸The Right to Participate- everyone has the right to inclusive city-building processes. 🔸Responsibility to the land and each other- we all share a responsibility to care for the land and each other. #NDTR #EveryChildMatters

🙌This past week, in celebration of #Parking(Day), our Executive Director, Amanda O'Rourke, spent some time with our friends from AARP Rhode Island, engaging the community in a Park(ing) Day event to exercise all the possibilities of turning car space into people space in our cities. 🌳🌳🌳 "Park(ing) day is a global public participatory project where people worldwide temporarily repurpose curbside parking space and convert them into public parks and social spaces."
