Release information

In the Japanese release, the Pokémon Power can only be used if Slowking is the Active Pokémon. In the English release, the Active Pokémon stipulation was removed. This allowed it to be used from the bench, allowing players to use multiple Slowking to further reduce the odds of a Trainer card being successfully played (possibly down to 1 in 16). As a result, Slowking became extremely popular, with games often coming down to who could lay down one or more Slowking first and shut down their opponent out of almost all search and draw power, all while clogging the opponent's draws and being essentially shielded from attack due to being on the Bench. Due to its widely perceived negative influence on gameplay, the card was banned from the Modified format at the end of 2002. This print misaligned Mind Blast's damage to the top instead of the center.

Trivia

  • This card was the last specific card to be banned from any official event until the Sandy Cloak Wormadam card from Secret Wonders and POP Series 7 was banned from the 2008 North American Professor Cup, after dominating the 2008 European Professor Cup due in part to being printed in POP Series 7 as an Uncommon (all Rare rarities are banned from use in the Professor Cup).
  • This was the last specific card to be banned from organized play until Lysandre's Trump Card in June of 2015.

Origin

This card's Pokédex entry comes from Pokémon Silver.
