Nintendo Badge Arcade (Japanese: バッジとれ〜るセンター Collectible Badge Center) is a freemium application for the Nintendo 3DS released in Japan on December 17, 2014, in North America on November 10, 2015, and in Europe and Australia on November 13, 2015. It features various claw crane minigames based on the many different Nintendo franchises. The player collects badges which they can then use to decorate the 3DS's HOME Menu. Due to the limits of the Nintendo 3DS's data storage capacity, the game has stopped receiving new badges as of May 26, 2017 in Japan, June 22, 2017 in America, and June 27, 2017 in Europe.

Pokémon badges were first available in the North American version of the game from November 17 to 23, 2015 to celebrate the release of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon. As of March 23, 2023, however, the available badges no longer rotate, with no Pokémon badges available to obtain.

This title became unavailable after the discontinuation of the 3DS eShop on March 27, 2023. After April 8, 2024, when all Nintendo 3DS servers (except Pokémon Bank) went offline, badges became unswitchable.

Gameplay

The player operates a variety of catcher machines which represent a wide variety of Nintendo franchises, inside these machines are badges which the player must try and knock out of the machine. Machines are playable for a limited time before being rotated out and replaced. The arcade is populated by default Mii's as well as those that are friends of the player.

Using the machines requires plays. Five plays are sold for ¥90, $1.00 USD, £0.90, €1.00, or AUD $1.30. After a group of plays is bought, the ability to buy more plays at once becomes available. Eventually, there will be options for buying plays in groups of five, ten, fifteen, and twenty. The first time the game is started, the player is given five free plays and more can be received during promotions. A practice machine can be used once each day to acquire more free plays. Every ten badges collected in the practice machine rewards one free play, with some badges giving bonus plays. Extra plays roll over to the next day. A free play was given on every Thursday and Monday and as of June 29, 2017, 2 free plays are given every day. The free plays stopped on March 23, 2023.

Badges are put on the Nintendo 3DS's HOME Menu in the slots used by applications, and may also be placed on folders. Some badges may actually be made of multiple badges, requiring multiple slots. Certain badges will also open applications such as the Nintendo eShop, Mii Maker, and the Nintendo 3DS camera. There are, however, no Pokémon badges that offer these features. Players could post snapshots of their HOME screens on Miiverse to show off their badge arrangements.

Badge Catchers

Players operate the machines by holding the A button or using the button on the touch screen to move the claws to the other side of the machine, releasing them at any time to stop the motion and initiate the mechanism inside. There are four different types of crane machines that are used in the arcade:

  • Standard Crane - A claw that when stopped attempts to pick up anything beneath it.
  • Hammer Crane - A hammer that when the button is released, descends until it meets resistance and swings, knocking anything in its path.
  • Explosive Crane - A bomb that when dropped explodes and sends badges flying, it swings while moving so the player needs to watch the angle it's at before releasing.
  • Stick Crane - A stick that extends down and pushes obstacles and badges, this crane continues to slide after you release the button.

Players can rotate between different machines during each play session, however once they have initiated a play session they must use all their available plays before they can return to the arcade hall. Badge machine contents can also be reset by tapping Arcade Bunny, who will restock the machine with new copies of badges already caught, and move ones they haven't back to their original positions.

Practice Catcher

The Practice Catcher can be visited once per day to practice on the available machines that day. The player gets five tries, the machine can't be reset and the player doesn't get to keep any of the wooden "dummy" badges. For every ten badges caught a free play is rewarded to the player and occasionally, caught badges will have targets on them that are hidden from the player. Blue targets give one extra free play and red targets reward three free plays. Should a player clear the machine of all badges, it will be reset until the player runs out of plays.

Collection

The Collection area is where a players badge collection is kept. Here the player can view the total number of badges owned, sets started, with a completion percentage and which categories the badges they own belong to. As the player collects more badges, Arcade Bunny will upgrade the statue in the area.

12 3000 Same statue, but with badges surrounding Arcade Bunny

Miiverse Gallery

Miiverse Gallery was where players could upload pictures of their own home screen to show off to other players. Due to the shut down of Miiverse on November 7, 2017 however, this feature is no longer available. Players can still see the screenshots of others that were uploaded before this date though and they will rotate through all the ones approved before the service was taken offline.

Theme Shop

Exclusive themes are available, these can be used to change the background of the home screen. The player can get access to these themes by purchasing a certain amount of plays from the store.

Information Stand

This is where the player can go if they have any questions regarding the application, as well as gives access to the games manual. It also allows the player to activate the newsletter portion so they get notified of any deals in the game on the home page. The badge box can also be rearranged here so it's easier to redesign the home screen.
