History

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

As a wild Pokémon
Mimikyu without its rag

Jessie's Mimikyu first appeared in Loading the Dex!, where it met Team Rocket in a forest on Melemele Island. Thinking it was cute, Jessie decided to catch Mimikyu. Having no offensive Pokémon yet, she threw Meowth at Mimikyu, but it was immune to Meowth's Fury Swipes. Losing his patience, Meowth tried to remove Mimikyu's rag but was hexed and had a near-death experience. Jessie and James were able to wake Meowth up, but were forced to give up and hide when they heard someone approach, who turned out to be Ash and his classmates. Having noticed Ash's Pikachu, Mimikyu became enraged. Ash attempted to catch Mimikyu, but Pikachu's Iron Tail had no effect due to Mimikyu's Ability Disguise. Mimikyu then beat up Pikachu using Play Rough. Team Rocket stepped in before the battle between Pikachu and Mimikyu went too far. Meowth jumped at Pikachu with Fury Swipes, but when Pikachu tried to counter, Mimikyu intervened. Speaking through Meowth, Mimikyu told Team Rocket it would help them against Pikachu, expressing a deep-seated hatred for it. However, before it could resume fighting Pikachu, a Bewear kidnapped Jessie and James. Meowth was able to get Mimikyu to disengage, and they chased Bewear.

In First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!, Team Rocket and Mimikyu were trapped in Bewear's den. Jessie was attempting to catch Mimikyu with a Poké Ball, because neither Meowth nor Wobbuffet could beat Bewear, but Mimikyu kept swatting it away with its tail stick. At some point, James dropped a Luxury Ball he was going to add to his collection. Jessie threw it at Mimikyu and successfully caught it. During their first battle with Pikachu, Mimikyu was called out and used Shadow Ball, but Pikachu used Electro Ball to intercept. Mimikyu used Play Rough on him and was about to use Shadow Claw, but thanks to Rowlet's Leafage, Pikachu was saved. Before the fight lasted too long, Bewear returned and carried Team Rocket away.

In Racing to a Big Event!, Mimikyu was entered in the Pokémon Pancake Race. Mimikyu constantly tried to abandon the race to attack Ash's Pikachu, forcing Jessie to intervene to keep it focused. During the last leg of the race Jessie had to leave Mimikyu alone, and as a result it was eliminated upon trying to attack Pikachu.

In A Team-on-Team Tussle!, Mimikyu assisted Team Rocket in their quest to obtain a Darkinium Z. It battled a Totem Alolan Raticate which protected the Z-Crystal but was swatted away by Raticate's tail. When Raticate was about to finish Team Rocket and some Team Skull Grunts off, Mimikyu emerged from the bushes and managed to defeat Raticate with a powerful combination of Wood Hammer and a super effective Play Rough.

In Mimikyu Unmasked!, Jessie sent Mimikyu out to battle Ash during another attempt to steal Pikachu. Team Rocket was quickly blasted off by Kiawe's Turtonator's Inferno Overdrive, separating Mimikyu and its Trainer from James, Meowth, and Wobbuffet. The Z-Move had also ripped Mimikyu's rag, forcing it to wear a malasada bag instead. Jessie and Mimikyu went shopping to find a replacement for Mimikyu's rag, but the Disguise Pokémon became irritated by Jessie's different outfits and stormed out of the store. Jessie then convinced Mimikyu to hand over its rag, allowing her to repair it. When Jessie later opened her bag of malasadas, a trio of Murkrow stole them but accidentally took Mimikyu's rag. Jessie, however, was able to retrieve it. When a larger flock of Murkrow returned for an attack, Mimikyu slid into its repaired rag and protected its Trainer from the flock. Later, Team Rocket returned to Ash for a rematch. Despite Mimikyu and Jessie's improved relationship, Mimikyu still ignored her commands to attack Lycanroc and attacked Pikachu instead, leaving Team Rocket open to Lycanroc's Continental Crush, sending them flying until Bewear arrived to take them to its den.

In Getting a Jump on the Competition!, Jessie entered Mimikyu in its second competition during the Pokémon Sled Jump Games. This time, it was able to stay focused, using multiple Shadow Balls to speed up and launch them into the air. Out of nowhere, however, Bewear appeared and snatched Team Rocket away, forcing them into a disqualification.

Mimikyu vs. Pikachu

In A Battle Hand-Off!, Mimikyu battled Ash's Pikachu at the Thrifty Megamart, during Ash's Ula'ula Island trial. It quickly gained the upper hand during the battle by overwhelming Pikachu with its fast and powerful attacks. At one point, Bewear arrived to take Team Rocket home, but Mimikyu managed to get Bewear to hold off and the battle continued. Eventually, Mimikyu prepared to finish off an exhausted Pikachu by using Let's Snuggle Forever for the first time. However, Pikachu survived the Z-Move when it shielded itself with its newly learned move Electroweb. When Ash's Electrium Z turned into a Pikashunium Z, Pikachu was able to use 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt, which defeated Mimikyu.

In Securing the Future!, Mimikyu joined the rest of Alola in showering Necrozma with light so it could return to its normal form.

Mimikyu seeing its face in the ocean's reflection

In Battle Royal 151!, Jessie used Mimikyu in the Battle Royal preliminary round of the Manalo Conference. However, it refused to follow her instructions and attacked any Pikachu it saw. It subsequently defeated Pikala's Pikachu, Bolt, and entered a heated battle with Ash's Pikachu, nearly giving Jessie's identity away. Jessie recalled Mimikyu when it tried to continue fighting Ash's Pikachu even after the round ended, narrowly allowing Jessie to advance to the Top 16.

In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, the trio received an order from Giovanni to return to the Team Rocket HQ due to their lack of achievements in Alola. Knowing their Pokémon wouldn't be happy at the HQ, Jessie and James decided to leave them behind. When Mimikyu heard of the upcoming departure, it took one last shot at Ash's Pikachu, attacking him on a beach. However, during the battle, it saw a reflection of its face in the water, which caused it to lose its will to fight and subsequently left, dejected. On its way back to Bewear's den, it met Meowth and told him about its experience. Meowth told it that nothing comes from hatred and that it should start looking forward. While Mimikyu and Mareanie slept that night, the trio departed for Kanto. Mimikyu was later seen playing with Mareanie and Stufful.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

In That New Old Gang of Mine!, Mimikyu was seen in the forest, carrying a Berry alongside Mareanie, Bewear, and Stufful.

In All Out, All of the Time!, Mimikyu was reunited with Jessie after she crash-landed in the hot spring next to Bewear's den.

Mimikyu appeared in a fantasy in Rocket Revengers! when Team Rocket reminisced about their old Pokémon.

Personality and characteristics

Mimikyu and Jessie

Unlike most Mimikyu who cosplay as Pikachu so that they can make friends like Pikachu, Jessie's Mimikyu bears an intense grudge towards all Pikachu and only dresses up like one because it is the thing that it despises the most. As a wild Pokémon, Mimikyu agreed to fight alongside Team Rocket so it could fight Ash's Pikachu. Mimikyu becomes immediately enraged whenever it sees a Pikachu and attacks against Jessie's orders, like in A Shocking Grocery Run!. Its hatred of Pikachu has assisted Team Rocket in almost stealing Ash's own Pikachu, but this has not always worked in Team Rocket's favor and can lead to complications. As shown in Racing to a Big Event!, Mimikyu was disqualified after it tried to attack Pikachu during the Pokémon Pancake Race. This was also shown in Acting True to Form! when Mimikyu lashed out with Shadow Claw and unintentionally freed Pikachu from his cage. During the Manalo Conference's qualifying round in Battle Royal 151!, it ignored Jessie's commands to keep a low profile. It attacked several Pikachu, even trying to attack Ash's after Jessie recalled it to its Luxury Ball. Later on, Mimikyu finally ended its grudge against Pikachu after seeing its reflection in the water and decided to start enjoying itself as a friendly Pokémon.

Mimikyu ignoring Jessie to attack a Pikachu

Mimikyu's primary target is any Pikachu, and it has often refused to battle other opponents. Exceptions include DJ Leo's Dugtrio in Getting the Band Back Together! and a Totem Alolan Raticate in A Team-on-Team Tussle!. In Show Me the Metal!, Jessie ordered Mimikyu to use Shadow Ball on a group of Meltan, its lack of interest in battling anything other than Pikachu resulted in it firing a small Shadow Ball which didn't go far. It spends much of its time outside its Poké Ball, wandering around and generally doing as it pleases. Mimikyu's bond with Jessie greatly improved in Mimikyu Unmasked! when Jessie repaired its torn disguise, and Mimikyu protected her from a flock of Murkrow. Since then, its relationship has continued to grow as shown in Getting a Jump on the Competition!, when it competed alongside Jessie in the Pokémon Sled Jump Games and performed with no attempt to disobey its Trainer.

According to Meowth, Mimikyu's speech is very intimidating, and he refuses to translate it when asked. When Team Rocket first met Mimikyu, Meowth and the normally chipper Wobbuffet were deeply disturbed by Mimikyu's words. Meowth's suspicions of Mimikyu often led to conflict between the pair. However, Meowth has since learned not to peek under Mimikyu's cloth following several induced nightmares like in The Sun, the Scare, the Secret Lair!.

Description: (Japanese: 全力キープ Full-Force Keep) If Jessie doesn't finish the pose for Let's Snuggle Forever, Mimikyu will not begin attacking. If it stays in this state for long enough, the hot air produced inside its rags will allow Mimikyu to float. Team Rocket used this discovery to steal as many Pikachu from the Pikachu Valley inside its rags, but Mimikyu was stopped by Pikala and the Boss.
