Arceus (Japanese: アルセウス Arceus), also known as almighty Sinnoh (Japanese: シンオウさま Shin'ou-sama), is a Mythical Pokémon and the titular character of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. It is the one who brings the player from the present day to the Hisui region, and also serves as the final boss of the game. Arceus is the name that humans call it.

In the core series games

Background

In the past, Arceus created the Hisui region and possibly the world, and was worshiped as "almighty Sinnoh" by the ancient Sinnoh people, the Celestica, of whom Cogita and Volo claim to be descended from. At some point, it was said to have banished Giratina to the Distortion World for its violence.

After the Ancient hero of legend and his ten Pokémon companions successfully faced it in battle, Arceus gave its blessings to the hero's companions,[1] which they used to protect the people and Pokémon of Hisui.[2] These Pokémon's descendants would become the noble Pokémon and Ride Pokémon. Afterwards, Arceus returned to the Hall of Origin, and its Plates were scattered across Hisui.

Following the disappearance of the Celestica people from Hisui, a new group of settlers arrived from across the sea, who adopted the Celesticas' beliefs as their own. They would later become the rivaling Diamond Clan and Pearl Clan, who believed almighty Sinnoh to be either Dialga or Palkia respectively. The two clans came to believe that their counterparts worshiped a false god and went to war against each other, with the conflict only ending after both sides became too weak to continue fighting.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

At the start of the game, Arceus calls out to the player, from within a realm located outside both space and time. This realm is completely absent of anything other than golden rays of light. Arceus asks the player's appearance and name, and after they have done so, it will introduce the setting of the game, much like the opening intros made by professors from other titles. It then tells the player that they should seek out all Pokémon, and they will be able to find Arceus again.

The player character is then seen falling through empty space and loses their smartphone. Suddenly, Arceus, as a glowing white silhouette, appears before the player and transforms their smartphone into the Arc Phone. The player is later found unconscious on Prelude Beach by Professor Laventon, having been sent back in time by Arceus. The player notices the Arc Phone on the ground nearby, and upon inspecting it, reads a message from Arceus: "Seek out all Pokémon." The Arc Phone will beep during certain points of the game, such as opening the caves to each of Hisui's three lakes, as a way for Arceus to help guide the player.

After the player has obtained all eighteen Plates, Arceus will transform the player's Celestica Flute into the Azure Flute at the Temple of Sinnoh. Upon playing it, if the player hasn't caught all Pokémon, they will be disappointed to see that nothing has happened. The Arc Phone then begins to beep, with Arceus again prompting the player to "Seek out all Pokémon."

Once the player has obtained at least one of every Pokémon in Hisui (except for Mythical Pokémon), the player can return to the Temple of Sinnoh and play the Azure Flute once more. This time, a glowing stairway appears, leading to the Hall of Origin. The player enters the area, seeing a large empty space. Arceus then appears and challenges the player to a battle. The Arc Phone becomes an infinite supply of Mysterious Balms. Like with the frenzied noble Pokémon, the player must hit Arceus with balms until the gauge fully depletes.

Once the player defeats Arceus, it will congratulate the player for successfully seeking out all Pokémon. Wishing to join the player on their journey, it will then grant them a part of itself as a Pokémon that the player can use in their party, as well as giving the player the Legend Plate.

Later, when the player returns to the Temple of Sinnoh, the Arc Phone will beep. Arceus will allow the player to have a rematch with Dialga, Palkia (regardless of which one the player originally faced) or Arceus itself.

After the player completes the Daybreak storyline and catching Arceus, it will call for the player's Arc Phone, requesting them to sleep in their home. In the player's dream, Arceus will reveal the Eternal Battle Reverie option for the player to test their skills and luck in a series of endless battles. The challenge ends when the player either loses or quits, and Arceus will leave behind various rewards based on the player's performance.

In all battles against Arceus, it will have the Legend Plate active, allowing it to change its type whenever it uses Judgment. During its first battle, it will have zero effort levels. In all other subsequent matches, it will have the full ten effort levels in all stats.

Reason: Description of attacks not complete

Arceus has two attack sequences. This is indicated by whether it is glowing blue or red.

  • Arceus glows blue in the first sequence.
    • First, it will be sending shock waves blasting outward from itself; simultaneously, a meteor will be regularly targeted at the player.
    • After a series of these attacks, it will aim six successive Judgment beams at the player.
    • Then it will resume a few more series of shock waves and meteors.
    • Next, it will form several energy orbs around itself, signaling an undodgable blue roar-like attack; and at the same time, it will be sending out slower-moving shockwaves. The player can cancel this attack by hitting Arceus with balms, eventually stunning it. Once it is stunned, the player can send out a Pokémon to battle.
  • Arceus glows red in the second sequence. It will start this sequence once 25% of its gauge has been depleted, and it will return to the first sequence after its gauge is depleted by 50%.
    • First, it will teleport to a far side of the arena and begin charging an attack: the entire stage will start glowing red, except an area around Arceus, and will eventually detonate.
    • Next, it will disappear completely; and a few seconds later, a crack in space will appear, and then quickly emerge from it to charge at the player in a straight line.
    • It will then fire six Judgment beams, like in the first phase.
    • It will then begin to initiate another special attack, an undodgable pink rending-like attack which the player can cancel by hitting it with balms. After this, it will become stunned, and the player can send out a Pokémon to battle.

Arceus has zero effort levels in all stats at first match. On rematch, these effort levels are ten in every stat.

On the 50th consecutive battle in Eternal Battle Reverie, Arceus will challenge the player. If it is defeated, then a special mark will be put on the player's save screen. Like with the other challenge, Arceus will have the Legend Plate equipped.

Artwork of Arceus from Chapter 1 of the Arceus Arc

While Arceus does not appear physically, it plays a major role in the Arceus Arc of the Main Story. It is first seen speaking to Rei during The Echo of a Deity's Voice in a similar manner to the player character at the start of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Later, while Professor Bellis is presenting her research on sync stones ultimate, Arceus speaks to everyone at the stadium, saying "Show me thy bond". Volo convinces Lear to hold a tournament for sync pairs to show Arceus their bonds, which Lear calls the Arceus Cup. During the Arceus Cup, Arceus grants arc suits to sync pairs who demonstrate an especially deep bond with their partner Pokémon, with Cynthia, Steven, and Lance being the first recipients.

According to a conversation with N and Iris, Cynthia's Giratina refuses to talk about Arceus, suggesting a similar grudge that other Giratina have with Arceus.
