Subject: ftp.debian.org: Source-only uploads which FTBFS on Arch: all buildd require NEW processing in next upload
Date: Wed, 9 Sep 2015 00:52:10 +0200 (CEST)
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: serious
Justification: Kafka is alive

Kind ftpmasters:

When a source-only upload fails to build from source in the
"Arch: all" autobuilder [1], the system seems to think that the source
does no longer provide such Arch: all packages.

As a result, it seems, new uploads of the same package go to NEW and
require manual intervention, even if the upload is precisely to fix
the bug which made the Arch: all autobuilder to FTBFS [2].

This is a catch-22. Fixing a FTBFS bug should ideally not require
manual intervention.

[1] For example, source-only upload of ekg2_1:0.4~pre+20120506.1-10
which was ACCEPTED.

[2] For example, source-only upload of ekg2_1:0.4~pre+20120506.1-11
which was the one that followed -10 and it was REJECTED.

Thanks.

The cruft report does think so after some time (meh, heuristics are bad)
and packages are then removed by the ftp team after some time.

The proper solution is probably to have the cruft-report check the
source package's Package-List field that lists all packages built (and
on which architecture they are built).

In this case, "after some time" seems to be less than 24 hours (!).

That's completely insane for both the person having to fix the FTBFS
bug and for the ftpmasters who have to process NEW again.

Kind ftpmasters: This bug makes unrelated software to break, as it
allows incomplete packages to propagate to testing.

Example: fte 0.50.2b6-6 FTBFS in the Arch: all autobuilder, but even
in such case it propagated to testing. In fact, the main fte package
lacks its configuration file in /etc. I consider this to be "broken
enough".

I already uploaded a fix, but now it's in NEW waiting for you to process it.

Of course, this is my fault for uploading a buggy package in
source-only form without testing that both "dpkg-buildpackage -A" and
"dpkg-buildpackage -B" work appropriately, but even in such case
maintainers do not deserve to be punished with this kafkian nightmare
for such things.

I completely fail to see how can you consider this as a "normal" bug.

Thanks.

Didn't realise this was still open; I did create an MR for this [!11] but waldi
fixed the real underlying problem in [!1].
