In developing countries characterized by economic inequality, scaling up a profitable quick commerce company can be possible due to the combination of low-cost logistics and high-margin baskets. However, the challange is replicating this success in developed markets like mid-EU, UK & USA. It requires a different approach in people management and a significantly more sophisticated courier optimization algorithm to maintain efficiency and profitability in a more competitive and costly environment.

Five things (I think) You Should Know This Week (02/08/2024) 1 - #Twitter (X) is out Brazil: A BR judge has mandated a general block for X in Brazil starting Friday. Issues of content moderation are the root cause, and @Elon Musk is not willing to give in. Having a spectrum on what is or isn’t free speech is fair and should be debated, but obeying a country’s law should always be preserved if you want to have a global business. It’s official: #X has become Musks’ political tool instead of a information sharing social network we used to know. 2 - #NFL Ownership Shake-Up: Private equity is set to enter the NFL's team ownership landscape (up to 10% of a team). NFL teams are becoming too expensive for institutional buyers, so opening up a small stake for bigger/more funded firms may be key for unlocking growth. This is not new: both NBA and European football have higher %age (and sometimes no limit) on institutional/fund ownership. Bottom line, no major change perceived for the game - good move. 3 - First week #USopen with all its Drama: #Alcaraz seems to not have recovered from his heavy defeat at the Olympics, having lost a 3-0 match in the second round. As he puts it, at some point the mental needs to come back, or else, you won’t be Big three material. #Djoko out too and first time no Big three win a slam in a calendar year; Sinner destroying on field, showing resilience despite all the drama around his doping case. The amount of substance found in his blood and his character shows that a vote of confidence should be handed to him. Finally, Americans doing well back home (#Tiafoe, Tommy, Fritz all through to quarters) and Nuno Borges equalling Portugal’s best ever result! 4 - #Telegram Founder Pavel #Durov arrested: Arrested on Wednesday in Paris, charged with being complicit in the spread of images of child sexual abuse, as well as a litany of other alleged violations. Telegram is a not-so-alternative (950M users WW) social platform that is “neutral” from government control and preserves free speech. It has been blocked multiple times in multiple countries (such as BR). This is a similar case to twitter in BR: we want to preserve freedom to individuals, but there are important consequences of no government alignment. Regulation and oversight is key and Durov should be held accountable to implement safety measure in its app. Said that, my guess is that he will emerge as a hero to many. 5 - #Apple’s Upcoming ‘Glowtime’ Event: Apple’s much-anticipated ‘Glowtime’ event on September 9 will unveil the iPhone 16 lineup, featuring innovations like a dedicated photography button and enhanced AI capabilities. These events have become less exciting, as Apple’s products have too (less innovation, more of the same and harder to fit new stuff at reasonable cost for the customer). This time could be different: I expect Apple to be the first to unlock AI usage at scale and have that as its lever for the coming generations of Iphones.
