How has the renewable energy market evolved over the last decade? In 2022, renewable energy accounted for approximately 23% of all energy consumption in the EU, increasing from 16.7% in 2013. It’s clear that the renewable energy market is growing at a rapid pace with no signs of slowing down. The growing awareness of climate change and the need for sustainable energy solutions have increased public and political support for renewables. But the evolution of the renewable energy market over the last decade has also been driven by four other important factors: 📜 Policy and Regulation: In 2018, the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) established clear and binding targets to achieve at least 32% of total energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030. EU member states then developed National Energy and Climate Plans that outlined their strategies to meet these targets, leading to coordinated efforts across Europe. 🖥️ Technological Advancements: Significant expansion in offshore wind energy has led to large-scale offshore wind farm installations across Europe and the deployment of floating wind turbines for wind farms in deeper waters. Cost reductions in solar PV technology have also made it increasingly competitive with traditional energy sources. 📈 Market Developments: Investment from both private and public sectors has increased, with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and other financial institutions providing substantial funding for renewable energy projects. Power Purchase Agreements, where companies pledge to purchase renewable energy directly from producers, also gained popularity which boosted demand and market stability. ⚡Grid and Storage Integration: Smart grid technology has made it easier to manage the intermittent nature of renewable energy and enhance grid stability. Furthermore, the development of new battery storage solutions and advancements in green hydrogen as a storage medium provide new opportunities for renewable energy storage. In more recent years, we have even seen the launch of the European Green Deal which aims for Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. This includes increasing the 2030 renewable energy target to 40% of final energy consumption. The future of the renewable energy market looks exciting but remains unpredictable and fast-changing. Meet Alexandra Topchieva, our Product Manager 👋 Alexandra is in charge of product management, using customer feedback to improve and enhance our product features. She also manages customer relationships to ensure the success and satisfaction of our customers. Her dual focus on customers and product development is crucial to help drive product adoption and ensure the continuous improvement of our software. Alexandra’s journey with TokWise started on a sunny summer day in 2020 when, after grabbing a cup of coffee and the latest copy of Forbes Bulgaria, her eyes landed on an article about a Bulgarian startup applying AI in the energy sector. Sound familiar? The next moment, she was emailing us at TokWise. Needless to say, we were impressed with Alexandra’s enthusiasm, proactivity, and communication skills, and welcomed her to the team.
