🗻 Building a Smarter Future for Alpine Regions Rural and mountain areas often face depopulation and economic stagnation due to a lack of digital infrastructure. The SmartCommUnity project, led by the University of Ljubljana and supported by 🇪🇺 Interreg, is set to reverse this trend by bringing innovative digital solutions to Alpine communities, making them more attractive for both living and working. Through close collaboration with the European Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP), the project aims to build the capacity of Alpine areas, providing them with the digital tools and 👩🏫 skills they need for a smart transition. These tools will help local communities develop sustainable and resilient solutions, with an emphasis on community involvement and sustainability, aligning with the 🌱 New European Bauhaus initiative. SmartCommUnity pioneers innovative solutions, such as gamification and civic tech, to foster local engagement and 🙋♂️networking. By showcasing the success of these efforts, the project hopes to inspire other Alpine areas to adopt a smarter, greener approach and encourage policymakers at all levels to embrace the vision of a forward-looking Alpine community. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #EUinMyRegion #Interreg 📷 ©️ SmartCommUnity, 2024. ✨ Excellent news ✨   We are pleased to announce that Sint-Paulus School in Kortrijk 🇧🇪, home of the NEB project Klimaatspeelplaats, has reached the Top 3️⃣ finalists for the World’s Best School Prize in the Environmental Action category!   This is a huge achievement as Sint-Paulus is the first Belgian school to ever become a finalist for these prizes - the most prestigious education prizes in the 🌍!   Faced with the challenges of climate change, urban heat islands, and biodiversity loss, Sint-Paulus launched the Klimaatspeelplaats project in 2016, a climate-adaptive playground. This project not only cools the urban environment but also improves air quality, increases biodiversity, and involves the whole community. Rightfully so, its impact was recognised with the NEB Prizes in 2023 🏆.   Should Sint-Paulus win the World's Best School Prize for Environmental Action, it plans to expand its vegetable garden and bee project, further integrating nature into everyday learning, and continuing to develop sustainable practices that benefit both students, teachers, and the wider community.   The winners of the World’s Best School Prizes will share a $50,000 prize fund, set to be announced in October 2024.   We are crossing our fingers for Sint-Paulus School! 🤞 Show your support by sharing this post and learn more about Klimaatspeelplaats here: https://lnkd.in/d8BuHd8T #NewEuropeanBauhaus #BestSchoolPrizes #BestSchoolPrizes24 T4 Education

We are committed to co-creating the NEB Facility 2025-2027 with the NEB Community and Member States. This is why, for several months, the #NewEuropeanBauhaus team has been consulting with national authorities, Community members, and other stakeholders to gather input on the content of the Facility. We want to thank everyone who has participated in these meetings so far and provided their valuable feedback and extend special thanks to governments and partners for their support in organising these sessions. Recently, we met with Swedish 🇸🇪 and Slovak 🇸🇰 authorities, as well as with stakeholders from CrAft - Creating Actionable Futures and the NEB Alliance. We are grateful for the insights, ideas, and enthusiasm shared during these and all other consultation meetings. Consultations will continue in the coming weeks to reach as many voices as possible. The city is not merely a human habitat. It is also a vital ecosystem where wildlife can find refuge and thrive. 🐦 Tartu, Estonia 🇪🇪 is taking urban biodiversity to new heights with the Birdway, a visionary project that merges nature with city life. The unique architectural installation of the Birdway features 12 bird nesting boxes made from sustainably sourced wood. These boxes are strategically placed along a pedestrian walkway in a public park to support bird species in the green belt along the Emajõgi River. By addressing the scarcity of avian breeding grounds, the Birdway enhances both the city’s beauty and its ecological health. 🌱 This project highlights the harmonious relationship between urban and natural environments. It also features local students who contributed to the construction, offering a fresh perspective on urban design. Birdway was one of the inspiring projects submitted for the 🇪🇺 2024 New European Bauhaus Prizes in the category of “Reconnecting with Nature”. Historic urban markets are in a period of change. Many struggle to stay relevant due to competition from department stores and are in need of revitalisation to preserve their identity. The Mercado do Bolhão in Porto 🇵🇹, classified as a “monument of public interest,” is one such market, facing deterioration despite several renovation attempts since 1990. The Mercado do Bolhão project, part of the NEB Prizes 2024, aims to transform the unique building, part of the memory and identity of Porto’s people. The project’s objective is to restore its 1914-17 Beaux-Arts structure and modernise it for today’s needs. The project is guided by three principles: reviving the market’s identity, updating the fresh produce experience, and reconnecting the market with the city through better accessibility, comfort, and functionality. Now, it’s thriving with a renewed sense of purpose, attracting locals and visitors alike, and celebrating the vibrant tradition of fresh markets in Porto. Would you visit the Mercado do Bolhão? Then share this post with your networks! 📷 ©️ Mercado do Bolhão, 2024. Content licensed to the European Union. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #HistoricRestoration #Porto

Earlier today, President Ursula von der Leyen visited NEBourhoods - New European Bauhaus Lighthouse in Munich, one of the six vibrant NEB lighthouse demonstrators. This project reflects the essence of the 🇪🇺 New European Bauhaus: creating sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful living spaces through innovation and collaboration. The 🇩🇪 Neuperlach district, home to 65,000 residents, is undergoing a transformation that embraces NEB values—reimagining residential buildings and vacant office spaces and utilising nature-based materials to build a future-proof, socially just, and environmentally friendly community. Led by the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulation of the City of Munich, the project team is collaborating with the Technical University of Munich, the Munich University of Applied Sciences, and three architecture studios to revitalise this 50-year-old district, making it more 🌱 sustainable, affordable, and attractive for all citizens. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #LeadTheChange #SustainableLiving

“Yes, there are problems. But we also have solutions!” Andrea Gebhard welcomed the guests to the auditorium of the Munich Urban Colab yesterday afternoon as part of our DLD Conference Nature Deep Dive. The task, she said, was to collect and replicate these solutions.   And so the project partners of Creating NEBourhoods Together presented their solutions on the topic ‘’Reconnecting with nature”, which we are implementing in Neuperlach for the New European Bauhaus as spaces adapted to nature and climate.   Sebastian Clark Koth kicked things off by reminding us of the value of public space and solutions that serve “public comfort”. His focus is on the challenge of increasing heat stress in our cities, the urban heat island. The answer developed for Neuperlach is replicable shading architectures for places where no natural shade providers, no trees, can be planted.   Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig then presented the “vision of a Baubotanik street with tree faces”: In contrast to technically constructed buildings, Baubotanik structures are in active exchange with their environment. They can maintain and repair themselves and change the microclimate of their immediate environment – “buildings as trees”.   “Architecture needs to connect”. With the Ecolopes research group, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Weisser is putting his idea into practice: the group developed a software plug-in that can be used to design building envelopes as habitats for various species – plants and animals alike. The prototype of a climate-adaptive and animal-friendly facade element, created together with TUM Digital Fabrication, was immediately convincing.   Prof. Dr. Thomas E. Hauck reminded us that contact with nature makes people healthier and happier, and his method of Animal-Aided Design was used in Neuperlach to create the “Nisthocker”, among other things. Their underlying approach sounds as simple as it is good: animals and plants are understood as actors in the planning process.   Marlene Stechl, on the other hand, transforms agricultural waste into high-quality building materials. As part of #NEBourhoods, she and her start-up HopfON were linked up with local companies in Neuperlach. They have now completed their first project: 14 square metres of acoustic panels made from hops have been installed in the Sustainable Living Lab NEXT MANNHEIM. Circularity is also the topic of Prof. Dr. Werner Lang and his team in Neuperlach. But what we need to change to make the transformation of our neighbourhoods a success starts much earlier: we have to move away from planning in linear structures and instead think in systems, in alternatives, from different perspectives – Design thinking. This is the key to finding sustainable solutions. Together. © NEBourhoods 🇪🇺 Funded by the EU The views and opinions expressed are those of the author only.
