Sustainable fuels and hydrogen in particular could play an important role for energy storage. Questions are however raised on hydrogen projects and their bankability. In order to facilitate and accelerate the energy transition, what can be done to help overcome these challenges and make projects viable? The European Commission has published the Innovation Fund IF24 Auction 2024 The European Commission has released the anticipated Terms and Conditions for the second auction of the #EUHydrogenBank, allocating an additional €1.2 billion to support the production of RFNBO #hydrogen. We commend numerous aspects of the new auction structure, the Commission having set ➡ a €4 per kilogram price cap, ➡ five-year timeline for project commissioning, and ➡ two-and-a-half-year deadline to reach final investment decision. These terms were explicitly sought after, almost unanimously, by our large and diverse membership. Meanwhile, the introduction of mandatory resilience criteria for the next call will greatly aid the push towards a more resilient, industrialized, and energy-secure Europe. Prospective projects bidding in the next call will have to limit the sourcing of #electrolyser stacks (which include surface treatment, cell unit production and stack assembly) from #China to a proportion of no more than 25% (in MWe) to fulfil this criterion. Compliance with European and international safety and cybersecurity standards will also be a mandatory requirement. Less positive is the missed opportunity to expand cumulation #flexibility, which would include projects already benefiting from #funding, the introduction of sectoral baskets and the cap for maximum bid amounts, that might undermine participation. There is also no indexation to inflation, which could provide extra uncertainty in the event of price fluctuations. The second auction is tentatively scheduled to launch by the beginning of December 2024, right after our flagship: the European Hydrogen Week 2024. TNO released the Evaluation of the levelized cost of hydrogen LCOH based on proposed electrolyser projects in the Netherlands Renewable Hydrogen Cost Element Evaluation Tool #RHyCEET  Presented by Minister Rob Jetten (Climate & Energy) and Minister Micky Adriaansens (EZK) to the House of Representatives. This report provides a comprehensive overview of the cost components involved in the production of renewable hydrogen through electrolysis. The report is an important step towards realizing the potential of renewable hydrogen in our energy transition. Efforts are exerted to drive down the #LCOH - Lowering CAPEX by further standardizing the Balance of Plant and fully embracing innovation. - Increasing the amount of running hours by offering ancillary services, running when hourly prices are below 20 €/MWh. - Recognizing the system integration role of electrolysers and therefore proposing lower and more cost-reflective network tariffs for electrolysers.
