Last week we attended the seminar on Zero-emission roadfreight organised by Nieuwsblad Transport. Our own key take-aways: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔 Several presentations and panel discussions mentioned the role of (large) shippers. The general feeling was they should (financially) catalyse zero emission trucks. We commented that yes, sustainability of transport is a responsibility of all partners in the supply chain. However, we remarked that most participants seemingly stepped over the fact that shippers already face a lot of work and investments to make their primary processes more sustainable and circular. This should really be a joined conversation, with shippers at the table. We are happy to chime in and catalyse such discussions. 𝑬𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑯𝒚𝒅𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒏 𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒔 Volvo and M.A.N. presented their views on the mix of energy of the truck fleet of the future. Panel discussions were clear that electric trucks are here to stay, for shorter distances. For long haul, sustainable fuels (HVO) are still preferred. The longer-term business case for hydrogen trucks is still uncertain, while fuel cell technology is still being improved. On the shorter term, hydrogen trucks are already in use at various transport companies where net-congestion is halting the introduction of electric trucks. TNO presented smart algorithms to support optimal charging in view of net congestion. Infrastructure investments for clean energy generation, storage and distribution and dealing with peaks for supply and demand will be key. We will keep following trends. 𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝑶2 ABN Amro and various other participants stressed not to underestimate the impact of CSRD and need for book keeping on the transportation footprint. Green Caravan pointed out that "zero" is no longer the correct answer in the ISO 14083, when assessing the CO2 footprint of electric transport. It depends on the mix of how the electricity was generated. All in all book keeping seems to become quite complex. At Transinnovate we are currently building tools to help shippers determine which decisions they can make in transport procurement and daily operations to reduce their footprint, and how to get 'as good as it gets' estimates. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 The seminar focused mostly on CO2. We missed the impact of sustainable trucks on emissions of NOx, sooth, etc on air quality. Although sustainable fuels reduce carbon footprint, they still emit other emissions. Environmental zones in cities and other future regulations may support the uptake of new energy carriers. #Intermodal transport was out of scope, but should be considered by shippers in a holistic view. After almost three years since its first draft, the new Regulation for the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) will enter into force on Thursday 18 July 2024. Once it enters into force, the new Regulation will provide EU member states with the guidelines to create a harmonised intermodal network throughout the Old Continent. The new network includes nine corridors: Atlantic, North Sea-Rhine-Mediterranean, North Sea-Baltic, Scandinavian-Mediterranean, Baltic-Adriatic, Rhine-Danube, Mediterranean, Western Balkans, Baltic-Black-Aegean Seas. Initially, the corridors were 10. However, the Rhine-Alpine and the North Sea-Mediterranean corridors were merged to form the North Sea-Rhine-Mediterranean corridor, an initiative that still leaves a few questions unanswered. #tent #intermodal #transportcorridors #transport #europeanunion
