Fairtrade supports the objectives of the EU Organic Regulation, aiming to enhance organic integrity. 🌿 However, the current form poses challenges for certified producers and traders in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. 🌍 The 2018 regulation, effective since January 2022, impacts production, certification, and labelling of organic products. For non-EU countries, the transition period ends on 31 December 2024. ⏳ The regulation's definition of ‘Groups of Operators’ is problematic. Many certified groups must create new legal entities, a daunting task. 📜 Additionally, new plant protection material requirements need clarity, and residue testing procedures before EU import are cumbersome. 🌾 Fairtrade urges the EU to simplify rules, extend the transition period by 15 months, and provide technical guidance and funding to support compliance. 🤝 Currently, 60% of Fairtrade certified organic coffee and cocoa producers, and 95% of small-scale banana producers do not meet the new regulation. 🍌☕️ The livelihoods of 800,000 families and the reliability of Fairtrade organic products are at risk.
