Larry and Huub, flashback to your proposition in 2006. We're almost 2 decades since the publication. From supply chain debacles to series of Food Safety failures, 'much water has flown down the bridge'. I'm curious and also wondering where we currently are at now globally? True, both detection limit and Food Safety limit play critical roles in ensuring good Food Safety practicing, but we're still screwing things up, despite that we have technological as well as analytical capability to identify trace amounts of substances, and we have defined regulatory thresholds for safe levels of hazardous substances in food. What exactly are we missing, if I may ask? Frank and Mindy suggested in their Food Safety News publication of 11/09/2023 (https://lnkd.in/ge7mWt4y) that 'The American people deserve a single food safety agency.' I'm thinking, if we're going to replace, or 'unify' (as suggested), we better have our due diligence conducted throughly thoroughly, and be prepared to go under the microscope (scrutiny) before actioning, else we may find ourselves back in the same place we were. Of my learning experience, starting or buying a Food business often lack the rigour of conducting due diligence to investigate all aspects of it before starting or making a binding decision to buy. Due diligence does involve taking reasonable steps to make sure that one is not making risky or poor decisions, paying too much or breaking any regulations or rules. For example, when buying over a Food business, the sole responsibility for assessing the business thoroughly to confirm that it is as ethical, compliant and profitable as claimed, must involve the scrutiny of Food Safety and Quality professionals. But more than often, they're sidelined, and there begins the challenge with maintaining an already struggling HACCP implementation!

Yesterday we saw the market trade significantly lower for butter. Driven by lower cream prices, cheaper Polish butter appeared, dragging down the sales prices for NL/DE/BE butter as well. Meanwhile, the GDT showed a steady outcome with butte prices still well above € 6000,-. SMP prices traded sideways and didn't show the upward momentum we expected. We are a bit puzzled about the market as prices keep trading up and down without any clear change of fundament. Read our market update for today via the link below.

FOOD SAFETY - ONLINE FOOD ALERGENS : Evaluation of food allergen information, labelling and unintended food allergen presence in imported prepacked foods and drinks purchased online in the UK. Some interesting insights: • Of the 768 pre-packaged products, 173 (22.5%) presented precautionary allergen labelling (PAL). • PAL was identified with 24 different phrasings. • Food allergen information online vs. on pack, 36 (36.0%) carried inconsistencies on pack, online and 15 (15.0%) mismatched. • Of the 77 products analysed, 24 (31.2%) contained unintended food allergen presence, ranging from 0.2 to 6780.0 mg/kg. • Of these, 9 (37.5%) had a risk ratio ≥ 1, recommending PAL, though 7 (29.2%) lacked PAL to communicate food allergen risks. This evidence-based survey reports that food allergen information online is provided in disparate formats and can be lacking, and non-compliant labelling practices have been observed on food allergen labels on pack provided by both manufacturers and importers. Further inconsistencies were identified between food allergen information of prepacked products online and on pack food allergen labelling. The use of PAL was inconsistent. I have noticed this inconsistency of food, allergen information and inconsistent use of PAL in my own online shopping. However there are some great apps out there that can now help people purchase products online with more confidence.
