BrIAS theme 2025: Sustainable Robotics, AI and Automation Call for Senior Fellows 2025 The 2025 fellowship call at the Brussels Institute for Advanced Studies offers high-level researchers and experts from foreign universities, institutes or organisations an unparalleled opportunity to join the institute as fellows for the Academic year 2024/25. Fellows will benefit from a research period of at least 2 months and up to 10 months, free from teaching and administrative duties. They will also become part of an international and interdisciplinary community of top-tier researchers and academics from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Additionally, fellows will enjoy an excellent work and living environment conveniently close to both universities in Brussels. The BrIAS programme will run from 13 January 2025 until 31 May 2025. The fellowship stay must coincide at least in part with the BrIAS 2025 programme. We are looking for exemplary researchers from any discipline relevant to the theme. Applicants will be assessed and prioritised following the selection criteria: - Scientific excellence of the candidate; - Relevance for the theme of sustainable development in robotics, AI, and automation; - Interdisciplinary approach; - Willingness to collaborate with local scientific institutions and other fellows - Exempted from teaching and admin tasks at home institutions during the fellowship - For academics, the minimum rank of tenure-track assistant professor (or equivalent) is requested. About us
The newly founded Brussels Institute for Advanced Studies (BrIAS), co-founded by the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), aims to expand upon the mission of other IASes as an incubator of ideas and research by focusing on current and urgent themes with a great societal impact. Located in the heart of Brussels, it aims to attract the very best scientists, artists or designers, coming from various fields or countries and with no philosophical or political restriction, and provide the opportunity to work in an atmosphere of complete freedom, collaboration, mutual emulation and cross-fertilisation. In this context, BrIAS aims to facilitate collaborations with countries facing critical challenges pertaining to sustainability.

Come and see our BrIAS Junior fellow Shirley Elprama at FARI AI for the Common Good Institute
Our next AI Happy Hour is coming up! 🎉 Join us to discuss the Acceptance of Occupational Exoskeletons with speaker Shirley Elprama (imec-SMIT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel). What are occupational exoskeletons? 🦾 They are a wearable technology that assist the body mechanically to reduce the impact of physical labor in order to lessen the risk of injuries and musculoskeletal disorders. Who can benefit? 🪴 Registered nurses, firefighters, janitors, bus drivers, plumbers, and maintenance workers are only a few examples of high risk occupants for musculoskeletal disorders who could benefit from this technology. This event will include: - Insightful Discussion: Shirley will address the under-utilization of occupational exoskeletons, identifying existing barriers and proposing strategies to enhance their acceptance. - Networking Opportunity: Connect with administrators, industry professionals, and AI enthusiasts. - Casual Happy Hour: Enjoy snacks and beverages in a relaxed setting after the session. The event is free, and you must register here to secure your spot: 👉 https://lnkd.in/ecV6wmd2 🗓 Date: Monday, June 24 🕔 Time: 17:30 📍 Location: FARI Test and Experience Center, Cantersteen 16, 1000 Brussels Organized by: FARI - AI for the Common Good Institute Supported by: SustAIn.brussels #AI #OccupationExoskeletons #Networking #HappyHour #BrusselsEvents #Brussels - Karen Boers - Laura Jousset - Diana R. - Alice Demaret, M. The first half day will be focusing on the theme “A safer sea” and will mostly deal with marine demining, with a special attention to the innovation surrounding the Belgian Mine Counter Measures program. The second part of the day will deal with land demining. The second day will focus on “War”, and in particular on the Historical, Ethical, Legal, and Geopolitical aspects of Robotics at War. The goal of this second day is to inform the public about the current policies as well as the various different perspectives and positions on the matter, so as to stimulate an informed debate. Polemics for the sake of polemics and uninformed/acritical political statements should stay out of this day. The event will take place on Friday the 26.4.2024 in the new BrIAS Seminar Hall. For the full programme and registration please visit our website: https://lnkd.in/e5bepmHP The Forum will also be live-streamed via our Youtube Channel @BrIAStalks https://lnkd.in/dtX_7dJb Location: BrIAS Seminar Hall Building AB, Usquare Bv General Jacques 210 1050 Ixelles Belgium Date: 26.4.2024 Time: 09:00 - 17:00 Registration: https://lnkd.in/exrnBPQM Description “How do we collaborate in a sustainable way with robotics in the future?” is the core topic of the field of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). As part of the Brias topic on sustainable robotics, we are organizing a forum consisting of two workshops on two subfields: the domain of HRI in surgery and HRI in EU manufacturing companies. As part of this forum, we will discuss the sustainability challenges of future Human-Robot interactions in these domains in-depth, and we will co-create solutions with the attendees in a multidisciplinary setting. With the output of both workshops, we want to synthesize a comparison of the debates in both subfields and will communicate these results to all participants and to the broader community.
