One of our initiatives focuses on developing and advancing clean water technologies, including nature-based solutions to ensure a reliable supply of clean water 💦. By combining art, technology, and science, S T ARTS4WaterII (STARTS) is committed to tackling the complex environmental and societal challenges present in Europe’s ports and port cities. We're happy to coordinate this project to enhance collaborative artistic research, creation and innovation in different port cities and their related ecosystems and industries across eight countries. A total of 20 residencies, facilitated by the 10 consortium partners, will be realised within this project. The winning artists of these residencies will be announced soon. 🎙 PODCAST ALERT 🎙 In het kader van het Life TANDEMS-project, nam onze EnergyVille/VITO collega Erika Meynaerts recent deel aan een aflevering van een vijfdelige 𝐩𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 reeks over #duurzaamheid in de #bouwsector, georkestreerd door Architectura.be en Kamp C. In de aflevering – die in het teken van 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧 staat – brengt Erika haar expertise in #energie- en #klimaatbeleid naar voren. Ze informeert je over de juridische, sociaal-economische en milieu-aspecten van #energiegemeenschappen, en inspireert met goede praktijken uit het Life TANDEMS-project. We are proud partners of the LIFE EMERALD project, where we collaborated with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland, the Irish Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) and University College Cork. VITO’s ATMOSYS toolbox was used to establish a daily air quality forecasting and mapping service for Ireland (AirQuality.ie) in accordance with EU Ambient Air Quality Directives. The ATMOSYS based high-resolution modelling tools were also customised and validated for Ireland to help support Ireland’s ongoing Clean Air Strategy. Info: atmosys.vito.be/en Using data assimilation and a high-density network of PM10 sensors managed by University College Cork and the EPA, we were able to improve the PM10 emissions dataset for several towns, allowing us to better estimate the contribution of local residential emissions to PM10 levels for effective air quality action plans. VITO’s ATMOSYS air quality modelling tools are being used across the EU to support clean air policies. LIFE EMERALD has given us the opportunity, thanks to the high-level ambitions and intensive implementation process of the EPA and DECC, to strengthen and extend our air quality modelling tools. Ensuring existing and future ATMOSYS users are now better equipped to meet the demands of air quality modelling in the context of new EU air quality policies. In september 2024 zullen er opnieuw trilwagens rondrijden in de Gemeente Dessel en de Gemeente Mol en voor het eerst ook in Retie (gemeentebestuur Retie). We zetten de wagens in om de diepe ondergrond in kaart te brengen in de ruime omgeving van de Balmatt-site in Mol. Om je als buurtbewoner hierover degelijk te kunnen informeren, organiseren we een informatiemoment op 8 september 2024. Enkele van onze experts gaan dieper in op het project en nadien bieden we je de kans om persoonlijk vragen te stellen en de aardwarmtecentrale te bezoeken. Baanbrekende technologie zorgt ervoor dat de natuur via Bosland, een AI-avatar, kan communiceren. Deze avatar is getraind op data uit ecosystemen, fungeert als pleitbezorger en vertaalt de toestand van de natuur in menselijke taal. Van data-analyse tot contentcreatie en het betrekken van belanghebbenden: dit project laat zien hoe AI een transformerende kracht kan zijn. Deze baanbrekende technologie werd ontwikkeld door duurzaamheidsexpert MILAN MEYBERG en is op de Love Tomorrow Conference 2024 aan de wereld voorgesteld. 🛰 VITO heeft de afgelopen 25 jaar uitgebreide ervaring opgebouwd in het vertalen van ruwe satellietbeelden naar bruikbare data en inzichten.
