A big thank you to our members! 🌟 On 1-2 October we brought together our national associations for an exciting meeting in Zurich 🏔, hosted by our Swiss association VAP – Verband der verladenden Wirtschaft . 💡 We provided updates on our upcoming advocacy activities, on technical policy and encouraged the bilateral dialogue between UIP and the National Associations. To round off the experience a fun-filled chocolate workshop🍫 followed after our meeting! 🙏 A huge thank you to all who joined us to stay on track for #RailFreight! 🛤
International Union of Wagon Keepers (UIP)
Rail Transportation
Umbrella association of wagon keepers and ECM’s from 14 European countries with a fleet of 238 000 rail freight wagons.
About us
Promoting rail freight wagons since 1950 🏆 UIP is a non-for-profit umbrella association based in Brussels 📢 we advocate for a long term & sustainable future of rail freight transport 🌎 We think naturally cross-border because the wagon leasing business operates with an European dimension in mind, with wagons circulating all over Europe. As our wagons do not know any borders we look for European solutions because they will make rail freight operations truly seamless and thus deliver for people and the society. We are the voice for national associations from 14 European countries, thus representing more than 250 wagon keepers with 238.000 freight wagons, performing more than 50 % of the rail freight tonne-Kilometres throughout Europe.

💡 Innovation in rail is the main focus on the #EuropeForRail train to #InnoTrans2024! As the leading private investors in rail freight, wagon keepers are committed to unlocking the potential of #DAC to render rail freight more efficient, competitive, and digitally integrated. David Zindo, UIP President emphasised: “Costs are what you pay, value is what you get. Innovation indeed increases costs per tonne, but we deliver more value to shippers. In addition, we save external costs for society.” He also stressed that: “DAC is key to attract the younger generation, improve workers' safety, and add value to the entire rail freight system. Now, it is the time to prove it can work. We need pioneer trains.” 🔎The panel discussion highlighted the importance of a coordinated EU-wide deployment of new solutions to lay the tracks for automation and digitalisation in #RailFreight. Together, we drive the future of rail freight!🚆

🚄 Europe's #RailFreight hits another milestone! The EDDP Programme Board & Supervisory Board confirmed the selection of the standard E-Coupler design for the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC) in European rail freight transport! 🔌 The E-Coupler : ➡ensures seamless rail freight operations, and ➡enables automation & digital rail services This decision marks a significant step towards improved interoperability of the #DAC in Europe and increased performance in the rail freight transport. 🔍Check out the post of Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking below👇 #fp5 #dac #transformingraifreight #EU_Rail
The Steering Committee of our #EU_Rail Flagship Project 5 (#FP5) has selected the E-Coupler design by J.M. Voith SE & Co. KG as the Europe-wide standard for the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC). The selection of a standard E-Coupler design marks a major milestone towards the interoperability of the #DAC in Europe improving the overall performance of #rail #freight #transport through increased capacity, higher throughput, and shorter transportation duration. 👇Click below to read the full press release from our project and find out more. https://bit.ly/3Yeb1SW ------------------ Groupe SNCF Wabtec Corporation Knorr-Bremse AG Hitachi Rail Siemens Mobility Deutsche Bahn eSGR European Smart Green Rail (CEMOSA COMSA Corporación ENYSE ETRA Tekniker) Alstom ADIF MERMEC AŽD CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) Ceit Research Center ČD Cargo, a.s. 📢 Intense weeks in the EU institutions and the transport community! The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU closed the current legislative term with yesterday’s meeting of the Transport Council. ❓ The results? Weights & Dimensions of Trucks 🤗 EU Member States were not able to find an agreement (general approach) on the cross-border traffic of longer and heavier trucks due to concerns brought forward also by UIP & other rail organisations. A progress report was published instead. Pending an agreement from Council side, the file is on hold now. More on UIP’s concerns here ➡ https://lnkd.in/gxg2FkSF Rail Capacity 😑 The Member States adopted a general approach which runs counter to an efficient single railway system. The text weakens the proposal of the EU Commission and exploits rail capacity sub-optimally. In reaction, UIP together with RUs and shippers have issued a joint appeal for more ambition during the trilogue ➡ https://lnkd.in/eUw2qPik Combined Transport 🤔 No significant progress on the file for now. The Belgian Presidency presented a progress report yesterday, while the EU Parliament will only start its examination of the proposal after the summer break.🎯 UIP advocates for an inclusion in the future rules of: all necessary actions that will boost intermodal transport and make it more efficient, competitive & attractive. #IntermodalTransport #EU2024BE #RailFreight

Council’s rail capacity General Approach falls short of the rail freight sector’s needs! Yesterday, the Council of the European Union adopted a General Approach on the Railway Infrastructure Capacity proposal, which sadly does not meet the objectives of ultimately attracting more freight to rail. The initial proposal of the European Commission aimed to introduce harmonised rules to: 🛤 optimise railway capacity 🛤 improve cross-border coordination during capacity planning 🛤 adjust the timetable design to the needs of rail freight 😠 However, the Council’s general approach jeopardises these goals because it would enable Member States to impose national rules during the strategic capacity planning process where IMs decide how much capacity each rail transport service gets. This will lead only to a continued fragmentation and sub-optimal exploitation of the available European railway infrastructure capacity. #UIP together with the associations ERFA-European Rail Freight Association, CLECAT, European Shippers' Council and UIRR is calling upon the European Commission, European Parliament and the Council to work towards a more ambitious text that would meet the business requirements of a functioning European rail freight market. Else the EU goal of achieving a 50% growth of rail freight by 2030 is moot. Take a look at the joint statement here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUw2qPik
