What's the #1 barrier to maritime decarbonization? 🤔 Here's my take... It's not the technology 🤖 I can name loads of brilliant companies with operationally proven decarbonization technology: Norsepower, bound4blue, Theyr, Optimum Voyage, Silverstream Technologies, etc. It's not a lack of regulatory pressure ⚖ CII, ETS, and FuelEU are making it inevitable. It's not a lack of goodwill 🌱 Many leading shipping companies are chasing highly ambitious decarbonization targets that go above and beyond: Odfjell SE, Torvald Klaveness, Berge Bulk, etc. So what's holding us back? Why aren't we going faster? I'm afraid it boils down to how the industry is set up 😔 The benefits of decarbonization often do not flow back to those making the investment: "Why would I invest in decarbonization technology XYZ if I'm not the one paying for the fuel?" We need to solve this alignment problem, by reshaping traditional performance clauses, so both sides can benefit financially from decarbonizing their vessel.
