The latest report by the United Nations on women and girls in global conflicts paints a dire picture: 🌐 In 2023, the proportion of women killed in armed conflicts doubled compared to 2022; 🌐 Four out of every ten people who died as a result of conflict in 2023 were women; 🌐 UN-verified cases of conflict-related sexual violence increased by 50%. Furthermore, despite rising conflicts, less than 10% of negotiators in peace processes in 2023 were women. With this in mind, we are hosting a unique sharing circle next week for women to rise up for solutions. How has patriarchy shaped our understanding of gender roles throughout history? What are the consequences for today’s societal structures and the movement towards gender equality? 👨🏫 The Nine is honoured to welcome Dr Tamas David-Barrett next month, who will discuss the research and findings of his latest book 'Gendered Species: A Natural History of Patriarchy.' In this exclusive guest lecture, he will discuss the history and evolution of patriarchy through a gendered lens, looking at how systems of power and control have impacted our perceptions of both men and women over the centuries. 🔍 Dr David-Barrett is a behavioural scientist who focuses on the Structural Microfoundations Theory about how the structure of social networks change during falling fertility, urbanisation, and migration. He teaches at Trinity College University of Oxford, and is affiliated with the Population Studies Research Institute in Helsinki, Finland. With a gender pay gap of 20%, Unequal Pay Day focuses on key disparities, such as: 🔺 4/10 women work part-time, compared to 1/10 men 🔺 Unequal birth leave 🔺 Service- and care-oriented professions - where women are more likely to be employed than men - are often lower paid 🔺 Lack of transparency in salary and promotion negotiations What would you do with 20% more pay?
