In a recent article with FMCG CEO, Secretary General Steve Claus highlighted the of continuing to advocate for steel as the ideal material for a circular economy as PPWR moves into its implementation phase. Our focus remains on urging policymakers to embrace higher ambitions for a greener and more circular Europe. We will continue to push for bolder regulation that encourages manufacturers to enhance the recyclability of their products and achieve the Commission’s objective that all packaging on the EU market be reusable or recyclable in an economically viable way by 2030. Steel for Packaging Europe has confirmed that 80.5% of steel packaging placed on the market was ‘really recycled’ in 2022. Steel packaging has already exceeded the EU 2025 recycling rate target of 70%, with an impressive 78.5% 'really recycled' in 2021! The 2022 'real recycling' rate will be announced on June 26th. Did you know that 78.5% of steel packaging was ‘really recycled’ in 2021? Thats equivalent to nearly 8 out of 10 steel packaging items put onto the market. ‘Real recycling’ is part of the new methodology to calculate recycling rates, whereby only materials collected at the entrance of recycling operations are used to calculate recycled tonnage.
