smartEn, together with corporate #RenewableEnergy buyers, producers, and other #EnergyTransition leaders, calls on the European Commission and Member States to ensure that the draft delegated act on the #EVbattery - #CarbonFootprint methodology recognises power purchase agreements (PPAs) for reducing the carbon footprint of electricity used in battery manufacturing. #SupportPPAs #Sustainability #EU #EVBatteries ✍ Cefic, EnergyTag, Eurelectric, Global Renewables Alliance, The International Tracking Standard Foundation: Founder of I-REC, RE-Source Platform, RECS Energy Certificate Association, SolarPower Europe, WindEurope
📢 EU action needed: Recognise EV battery manufacturer’s PPAs! RE-Source Platform, alongside corporate renewable energy buyers, producers, and energy transition leaders, is calling for urgent action from the EU! 🚗 🔋 The Draft Delegated Act on the EV battery carbon footprint methodology risks hampering Europe's growing power purchase agreement (PPA) market – a key decarbonisation tool for corporates. We call the European Commission and Member States to: ✅ Recognise PPAs in the EV battery carbon footprint methodology. ✅ Continue incentivising EV battery supply chain to decarbonise their electricity supply by combining PPAs and Guarantees of Origin (GOs). ✅ Don’t create parallel carbon accounting methodologies and risk double-counting. Read the full joint letter and join us in urging the EU to act! smartEn Smart Energy Europe reposted this
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the 10th Copenhagen #EnergyInfrastructureForum. This marked smartEn Smart Energy Europe's first participation in the #EnergyIF, but it certainly won't be the last! The Flexible Demand Management Industry plays a crucial role in optimising the use of existing and future electricity grids through efficient and flexible consumers. Key topics discussed included distribution grid planning, anticipatory investment, smart grid indicators, and grid incentives through remuneration. Here are my key takeaways and contributions: ⚡️Efficient use of existing and future grids is urgent and essential. This should guide network planning, anticipatory investments, and grid remuneration decisions. ⚡️Distribution network development plans must go beyond meeting passive demand. They should encourage #DemandSideFlexibility as an alternative to system expansion, in line with Article 32 of the #Electricity Directive. This should be supported by the upcoming Network Code on demand response. ⚡️A comprehensive cost-benefit analysis comparing #CAPEX and #OPEX solutions, considering costs for consumers, implementation speed, and risks of stranded assets is crucial. ⚡️Involving market actors and consumers in grid planning is key. ⚡️ Regulators should enable efficient remuneration for system operators using a #TOTEX approach, considering both capital and operational costs equally. This should be complemented by performance targets for efficient network operations. 💡 For more insights, check out our recent publication on efficient and flexible consumers for smart electricity grids 👇 smartEn paper on Efficient and Flexible Consumers for Smart Electricity Grids https://lnkd.in/e6NKXjqe #EnergyIF #DemandResponse #SystemEfficiency smartEn Smart Energy Europe European Commission EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) Ricardo Renedo Williams

What a whirlwind the last few years have been for the energy sector! We have worked closely with policymakers, and to have the role of #FlexibleDemand recognised by the EU institutions is one of our proudest moments! We were honored to welcome Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson at our recent celebration of reaching 100 members. Her presence and acknowledgment underscore the importance of flexible demand, which is now at the forefront of EU policies and continues to gain momentum. Our cooperation with the Commission during the previous mandate has been pivotal, and we are eager to continue this partnership as we move into the new EU legislature for 2024-2029. smartEn is committed to supporting the implementation of the 64 provisions set by the EU, empowering consumers to actively participate in the clean #EnergyTransition and be rewarded for it. Here’s to many more milestones and successes! #DemandSideFlexibility

Looking back on #EUSEW2024! As always, it was a unique opportunity to come together at the biggest European event for the clean #EnergyTransition! This year's edition focused on #NetZero energy solutions for a competitive Europe. If you missed our sessions, check out some highlights and key takeaways! ☑ On day 2, our Head of Policy Marion Malafosse joined the session 'When challenge meets opportunity: #HeatPumps & #electricity #grids', organised by EHI - Association of the European Heating Industry & Bundesverband der Deutschen Heizungsindustrie e.V. (BDH). The main takeaways were: ➖ #SmartElectrification of heating: Heat pumps must be capable of reacting to system needs and be digitally enabled to provide flexibility ➖ Valorising #DemandSideFlexibility: Simply deploying heat pumps is not enough, their flexibility must be activated and barriers to demand-side flexibility need to be removed ➖ Incentivising #SystemOperators: They should be incentivized to utilise the flexibility of heat pumps, helping to manage #GridCongestion and the increased variability of the #EnergySystem ☑ On day 3, Marion also chaired the session “What about #flexibility? How customers can improve power systems” which featured a panel discussion with NIBE, the Federation of German Consumer Organisations, Compass Lexecon, Voltalis and Sympower. Here, the outcomes of the discussion were: ➖ Demand-side flexibility business models are not a futuristic scenario, tangible & profitable solutions already exist ➖ The potential is huge, but is still untapped as regulatory barriers are still hindering the ability to leverage all benefits ➖ There is an urgency to remove these barriers and activate demand-side flexibility, as there is no time to waste in achieving a sustainable energy system in a cost-effective way We are already looking forward to EUSEW 2025, and for demand-side flexibility to continue gaining momentum in light of the new EU legislature 2024/2029.

With an urgent statement, the Platform for Electromobility emphasised the importance of maintaining the 2035 #ZeroEmission cars goal as a cornerstone of Europe's #EV industrial strategy. This goal drives investment into European automotive, battery, and infrastructure sectors, providing a clear regulatory framework essential for long-term growth. It also boosts the market uptake of affordable zero-emission vehicles, offering consumers more choices. Maintaining the 2035 goal is crucial for achieving decarbonisation targets and enhancing Europe's global competitiveness. smartEn fully supports this position, warning that reversing the goal would harm EU industry and disrupt investments. Let's implement, industrialise and invest for 2035! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dVVbSdXT.
The Platform for Electromobility has established its legitimacy and credibility through well-balanced positions and recommendations, supported by consensus among all industrial sectors and civil society organizations it represents. Today, our statement is unequivocal: Reversing the 2035 zero-emission cars goal will harm EU industry. In an urgent statement, the Platform warns against undermining key EU legislation already agreed upon by MEPs and EU countries in the previous legislative period. To backtrack now would also severely penalize all industrial actors, including many of our members, who have already invested in this transition. European-based industries in automotive, batteries, infrastructure sectors, as well as energy producers, local authorities, and mobility service providers, are united in advocating for a consistent and clear regulatory framework. Our guiding principles are: #Implement #Industrialise #Invest ...for 2035.
