In October 2023, Bellona Europa announced a new FedEx-backed initiative Ports2Decarb – a project aiming to maximise the role of European sea and river ports in building the infrastructure needed to support industrial decarbonisation. 💡Eight months later – what has the project achieved so far? Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (#CCUS) is crucial for decarbonising the Belgian economy. That’s why we signed the Oslo Declaration today. This declaration signifies the collective commitment to promote CCUS technologies, which are indispensable tools in our goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. There is no time to waste: we must act now to minimise our impact on the climate! To put our words into action, we are joining forces with Fluxys to develop a CO2 compression plant in Zeebrugge. Captured CO2 from (among others) Belgian and German industries will be transported via the C-grid pipeline network to this collection and compression plant. From Zeebrugge it can be further transported via an undersea pipeline for permanent storage in Norway's old oil and gas reservoirs. These initiatives show our commitment to advancing CCUS technologies and circular economy practices. We keep on seeking partnerships with CCU players who can work with us on convert carbon into valuable products, close the carbon cycle and contribute to a circular economy. #OsloDeclaration #Carbon #ClimateNeutral

📣 On May 30th our Climate Technology and Policy Manager Jānis Volberts spoke at an event in Paris organised by the DGITM - Direction générale des infrastructures, des transports et des mobilités (DGITM) and led by Cerema. 🚢 During the event, focused on port marketing and the ecological transition, Janis presented Bellona’s work on the role of ports as decarbonisation hubs and in facilitating CO2 capture, transport and storage. as part of the Ports2Decarb project. 🔑 points mentioned:  1️⃣ There is the need for open access, cross border, multi-modal CO2 transport network, to facilitate industrial carbon capture and storage.  2️⃣ European ports should constitute logistical and industrial CCS hubs, to facilitate climate change mitigation across sectors. Long awaited amendments in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) will finally allow support of multimodal CO2 transport and terminal infrastructure. Substantial and speedy investments are needed to improve port operations to handle the CO2 captured from different industrial emitters and transported by ship to permanent storage sites.

Last week we moderated a workshop on getting to net zero faster with ports as decarbonisation hubs at the Global CCS Institute Europe Members Meeting in Rotterdam. Some of the highlights include the need to develop multi modal CO2 transport infrastructure to accommodate smaller emitters located away from the main CO2 routes. Participants also discussed the need for international coordination on CO2 standards via standardisation bodies and European Commission, as well as for technological solutions allowing CO2 network operators, which could also include ports, to manage the risks associated with CO2 streams coming from different sources at potentially varying purity levels. CO2 shipping companies are looking at different transport conditions (e.g. medium vs low pressure) to find the most cost-efficient solution, determined mainly by distance and volumes. But this needs adequately designed and equipped infrastructure at ports, as varying pressure levels have different material requirements. Floating CO2 terminals were mentioned as a potential solution to space limitations in ports. Smaller ports closer to the emitters are crucial to ensure access to larger CO2 hubs where CO2 could be aggregated and temporarily stored in bigger volumes before it is transported for further permanent storage via ships or pipelines. Today CO2 is traded and shipped mainly for the food sector, but we need to scale-up the whole value chain rapidly if we are realistically planning to meet the climate targets for industrial decarbonization. Recent examples of ports classified as Projects of Common Interest allowing them to apply for EU infrastructure funding are encouraging, but ETS price levels are not yet high enough to give confidence to project developers to move to Final Investment Decisions. 🚢🚢Europe’s first two CO2 transport ships are all set to set sail! Exciting news from Northern Lights JV: Europe’s first CO2 transport ships are about to start their journey, marking a significant milestone in the development of CCS. These are first of their kind liquified CO2 carriers, each with a cargo capacity of 7,500 cubic meters. These ships will transport CO2 from capture sites at the Heidelberg Materials cement plant in Breivik and the Hafslund Oslo Celsio waste-to-energy facility. Two more vessels will be joining the Northern Lights fleet, following cross-border agreements to transport CO2 by ships from the Yara Europe Sluiskil plant in The Netherlands and Ørsted bioenergy-CCS plants in Denmark.   💡Shipborne CO2 transport plays an important role in developing carbon capture and storage projects by 2030.
