🤝PHOENICS: Progress meeting in Berlin🤝 On September 20th, the PHOENICS consortium met in Berlin at Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI to give an overview of their latest results in designing an optical computing architecture. As the project is in the process of being finalized, the consortium outlined the project's final steps and discussed the assembly of a prototype. This brought together all the past few months' work to finalize the hybrid integration of the different chip platforms. On the Neuromorphic Quantumphotonics - Pernice Lab side, Jelle, Lennart, Anna, Ivonne, Constanze, and Wolfram attended the meeting. #PHOENICSProject #ProjectMeeting #OpticalComputing

🌉 Met Sentea’s uitleessystemen kunnen glasvezelsensoren worden ingezet om defecten te voorspellen bij bruggen, gebouwen, windturbines, motoren, chirurgische instrumenten enz. 🎯 De firma van Thijs Spuesens, Karsten Verhaegen en Ronny Bockstaele (met PMV als aandeelhouder) ontwikkelde nu een FBG-uitleessysteem op een enkele siliciumchip, inclusief lichtbron, waardoor een ongekende meetnauwkeurigheid ontstaat met een kleinere uitleeseenheid. FBG-detectie is een zeer precieze manier om temperatuur, spanning of druk te meten onder zware omstandigheden maar de bestaande uitleessystemen zijn omvangrijk en duur wat een breed gebruik tot dusver in de weg stond. 💪 Sentea's combinatie van een lichtbronchip met een siliciumchip tilt de vezeldetectietechnologie nu naar een hoger niveau. ✨️ Tonight I had the honour to introduce the Ghent healthtech community to the wonderful world of photonics during the 5th edition of #HealthTechTuesday. 🎤 We discussed the advantages of such systems for healthcare applications and were introduced to the activities of Azalea Vision by Andrés Vásquez Quintero and of Axithra by Leander Van Neste 🧩In a short panel discussion we highlighted the important and leading position of Ghent in the photonics ecosystem, including the unique expertise present in UGent/imec research groups such as cmst-microsystems and Photonics Research Group (Ghent University - imec) ...🥂 and we finished with an inspiring networking reception! 🪄 The future of healthcare is challenging but looks bright and will be powered by photonics! imec.istart | Stad Gent | Universiteit Gent

Wim Bogaerts of Ghent University and imec gives an overview at #ECOC2024 on how the PHORMIC project extends silicon photonics with low-power MEMS and transfer-printed lasers, building a scalable platform for wafer-scale fabrication, flexible packaging and programmable photonics.

Second harmonic generation in aluminium gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) waveguides The Technical University of Denmark (DTU - Technical University of Denmark) is a partner in the "Chip-Scale Optical Atomic Clock" (CSOC) project, funded by the European Innovation Council Pathfinder Project. DTU’s contribution focuses on developing an ultra-efficient, on-chip second harmonic generation (SHG) device using high-confinement AlGaAs waveguides. This device will be heterogeneously integrated with silicon nitride circuits produced by LIGENTEC, where on-chip lasers and detectors developed by Ghent University will also be integrated for self-referencing the microcomb developed by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). The realization of an optical atomic clock requires a frequency comb that can be stabilized through self-referencing. In the f-2f self-referencing scheme, efficient frequency doubling is essential, particularly for on-chip operation where available power is limited. The Nanophotonics Devices Group at DTU has developed a highly confined AlGaAs waveguide platform with a strong second-order nonlinearity coefficient to enable frequency doubling near 1550 nm. A mode phase-matching scheme was employed to design waveguide dimensions that allow the fundamental TE mode at 1550 nm to generate a second harmonic fundamental TM mode at 775 nm.
