📣 Nemo Link Limited welcomes the recent Energy UK's report: #MissionPossible The steps to make Britain a #clean energy superpower, in particular in relation to closer UK-EU #cooperation on #energy & #climate. 🏷 Nemo Link shares the concern this report highlights with the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM). The EU CBAM in its current form could create a very significant #tradebarrier for #electricity #imports into the EU, irrespective of equivalent carbon prices in exporting third countries. This would negatively impact all dimensions of the energy trilemma. Nemo Link would support this #cooperation, and efforts by the UK and EU to examine #relinking the UK and EU ETS schemes, to pursue an #exemption from the EU CBAM for the UK. 🤝 We also welcome Energy UK’s view on the need for greater #cooperation between the UK and EU and the importance for #restoring #efficient #electricity #trading. Moving to more efficient trade by prioritising the UK-EU electricity trading arrangements workstreams will ensure the UK can speed up the transition to clean power by 2030. Utilities
We connect the electricity systems of Belgium & GB, helping to provide affordable, clean and secure electricity.
About us
ABOUT US The Nemo Link interconnector is a joint venture between National Grid Interconnector Holdings Limited, a subsidiary company of the UK’s National Grid Plc, and the Belgian Elia group. The interconnector electrically connects Belgium and GB providing both countries with improved grid reliability and access to sustainable generation. Nemo Link consists of subsea and underground cables connected to a converter station and an electricity substation in each country, which allows electricity to flow in either direction between the two countries. The interconnector is a key enabler for the energy transition towards a sustainable carbon-neutral future. TRADE WITH US Nemo Link couples the GB and Belgium power markets allowing electricity to be physically traded between both countries. Through Nemo Link, market parties have the opportunity to buy capacity up to 1000 MW in either direction via explicit and/or implicit auctions. Nemo Link offers its Long-Term explicit auctions on the Single Allocation Platform managed by the Joint Allocation Office (JAO). All available capacity at the Day-Ahead stage is offered to the market via the Single Day-Ahead Market Coupling (SDAC) mechanism whereby interconnector capacity and energy get sold at the same time (so-called implicit auctions). All available capacity after the Day-Ahead stage is offered to the market via the Intraday explicit auctions run by the JAO's Auction Platform. Acquired Long-term and Intraday capacity rights can get nominated via the Regional Nomination Platform. CONTACT US If you have any questions or would like to discuss any matters on the Nemo Link interconnector, please contact the Customer Team at [email protected] or visit our website www.nemolink.co.uk to subscribe to our newsletters.

Joint assets such as Nemo Link Limited, the interconnector that connects #Belgium to #GreatBritain, serve as an excellent example of why #partnerships are key for the success of the #energytransition. In light of this, and as part of the schedule of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024, Elia Group and Nemo Link Limited hosted a tour of Nemo Link’s converter station in #Bruges yesterday. A group of 65 visitors – comprising energy attachés from EU permanent representations, representatives from the European Commission and the Council secretariat, officials from Belgium’s FPS Economy and diplomats from some of the EU’s neighbouring countries – took part in the tour. Staff from Nemo Link Limited and Elia Group, including Bart Goethals, Lisa Kettle, Wouter Van Oekel, Bernard De Clercq, Thijs Vandenbussche, Jelle Reynaert, and Marianne Houman, took their visitors through the interconnector’s role and operation, including the framework that covers this. Nemo Link also explained some of its key challenges around #Brexit (less efficient #marketcoupling and issues around #EUCBAM) that would require #political will from both the UK and the EU to get resolved. Nemo Link, which has been operational since January 2019, was Belgium’s first #subsea #electricity #interconnector and is one of National Grid’s six operating interconnectors to Europe. It enables electricity to be exchanged between Belgium and Great Britain, improving their security of supply, and gives consumers in both countries access to cheaper electricity generated abroad. The path to #netzero is not a straightforward one. Establishing close relationships between the EU and its #neighbours, including the UK, will play a major part in allowing us to reach it. #partnerships #decarbonisation #netzero #renewables #interconnector #offshore #offshoredevelopment #EUpresidency #belgium #nemolink

Today is #EarthDay 🌍 but sustainability and the environment are a key focus for us all at #NemoLink every day. ⚡ Nemo Link is one of the most reliable #interconnectors of its type in the world and, in its first five years in operation, has enabled the exchange of 29.6 Terawatt hours of electricity between GB and Belgium. 🚗 During this time, Nemo Link has saved 1.4 million tonnes of carbon. The equivalent to taking 650,000 cars off the road! 💡 Between 2020 and 2030, National Grid estimate their interconnectors, including Nemo Link, will help Britain prevent 100 million tonnes of carbon emissions. By moving #zero-carbon energy from where it’s produced to where it’s needed most, interconnectors help to reduce carbon emissions to reach #netzero. 🤝 Nemo Link also strengthens international cooperation, which will be essential for the decarbonisation of Europe. The interconnector facilitates the integration of the European electricity market and the exchange of renewable energy over a vast geographical area. Lisa Kettle, Nemo Link Operations Director said: ‘At Nemo Link we are proud to be part of the drive to Net Zero, playing an active part in the decarbonisation of the UK and Europe for end users. Now more than ever, it’s important that we continue to consider our environment as a pillar of our decision making. Even the smallest incremental change will have a lasting effect, building on the last improvement. The recent addition of solar panels at our Belgian site demonstrates our ongoing desire to further the energy transition.’ 🍃 It is important to recognise these efforts, and for all of us at Nemo Link to continue to work towards a greener, cleaner world. #earthday2024

Yesterday AFRY Management Consulting and project partners held a webinar exploring the insights from our #EUCBAM assessment. The slide pack and recording are now available: https://lnkd.in/dri3JssR The study identifies two issues with the method of application of EU CBAM to electricity imports from GB: 1. Risk of over-statement of #emissions assumed for electricity imports from GB, by estimated carbon emission factors used as default values. 2. Excessive #carbonprice exposure for imports from GB, due to the difficulties identifying the source of power generated. These issues will unduly increase the cost of electricity imports into the EU from GB, presenting a number of adverse outcomes, including significantly reducing electricity imports from Britain to the EU, as well as harming the delivery of #decarbonisation policies. Pieter-Jan Marsboom, #NemoLink’s Product and Service Manager presented at the webinar with suggested mitigation options from the study group and called for a price-coupling system between the UK and EU ETS Systems as a means for a UK exemption from EU CBAM. Continuing our wood anniversary spirit, a few of the Nemo Link Team Munti Nguyen, Michele Jordan, Scott Maybury, Ben McGhee volunteered today with the Field Studies Council Bishop Woods. Also, Thank You to all our customers who completed this year’s customer survey. For every completed survey, we pledge to plant a tree. This was not our usual day in the office, hard at work coppicing a tree and clearing some space in the woodland to make light for younger trees. We will be back in the wintertime to help with some more tree planting.

Nemo Link Limited, together with project partners and AFRY Management Consulting today published an impact study report on the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), focused on #electricityimports from Great Britain. EU #CBAM in its current form could create a very significant #tradebarrier for electricity imports into the EU even if the #carbonprices in the third country are identical. This would negatively impact all dimensions of the energy trilemma. Political will is urgently called upon to get the identified issues addressed and an EU CBAM exemption for the UK e.g. via relinking the #ETS schemes should be examined. #crossbordertrading #interconnector #energytransition #decarbonisation #CBAMimpactstudy #tradebarrier
AFRY Management Consulting has recently published a report bringing into focus the potential impact of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on electricity imports from Great Britain. The study, commissioned by interconnector and transmission companies, reveals two key issues: 1️⃣ Risk of significant over-statement of emissions assumed for GB electricity imports, due to default values being based on historic fossil fuel generation CO2 intensity. 2️⃣ Excessive carbon price exposure for imports from GB, linked to practical obstacles to demonstration of a carbon price having been paid in GB by emitting generation and exposure of GB zero-carbon generation to carbon costs. These challenges may increase the carbon price exposure of GB generation, raise the cost of electricity imports into the EU from GB, and ultimately put at risk our goals for building offshore grid infrastructure in the North Sea and decarbonisation objectives. 📖 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eXkmvaSi “CBAM enters into full force in 2026, but trading for this time period and beyond is already happening, so impacts are already being felt. To address the identified issues, action is needed now. This includes actions to enhance CBAM application in the short-term and actions to progress potential exemption routes that offer more enduring arrangements.” Simon Bradbury, Senior Principal at AFRY Management Consulting. On 25th March at 13:00 GMT / 14:00 CET, AFRY will be presenting the insights from its assessment, outlining the issues identified and their implications. ✍ Register here: https://lnkd.in/eXkmZTZy For any questions about the study or the upcoming webinar, please contact Simon Bradbury or Asimina Karakyriakou. #makingfuture #energytransition #decarbonisation #CBAM #CBAMimpactstudy
