Negative Emissions Platform works towards a better political recognition of carbon removal technologies and solutions.

About us

The Negative Emissions Platform is a Brussels-based partnership to improve the political and public recognition of carbon removal technologies and solutions. We represent technology developers, providers and sponsors, research centers, academia, think-tanks and the civil society. Our main focus is on engineered and hybrid approaches with a potential for permanent removal of CO2 - direct air capture and bio-energy with carbon capture and storage, enhanced weathering on land and in the oceans, biochar, soil carbon sequestration, mineralisation in building materials and the use of wood in lasting products and materials. We also actively promote the use of atmospheric CO₂ in e-fuels, materials and chemicals as a way of closing the carbon cycle, while delivering the economies of scale and cost reductions for atmospheric capture technologies. Membership in Negative Emissions Platform is open to a wide range of organisations (varying fees apply), providing they meet the following criteria: They fully support the platform objectives. They are, or want to become active in Europe as a technology developer, retailer, distributor, promoter or sponsor or; They are a national research entity, higher education institution, think-tank or civil society organisation dedicated fully or partially to contributing to research, advocacy and communication in the area of negative emission technologies. • This week, NEP shared its response to the UK public consultation on integrating greenhouse gas removals (GGR) into the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). We commend the UK Government for leading the way in establishing a compliance market for GGRs.   🔑 Key considerations: ▶ Permanence: Only permanent GGRs should be integrated into the ETS, ensuring long-term carbon neutrality ▶Timeline: NEP supports the goal to establish a compliance market by 2028! The right conditions will need to be in place, including driving down the cost of permanent GGR, and robust rules on monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) ▶Financing: ETS-integration is just one part of the puzzle but will not be able to fully finance the sector, especially in the near term; additional financing tools are needed to support the GGR sector.   👏 We applaud the UK Government’s efforts in driving forward this important work! The Negative Emissions Platform has kicked off a series of policy briefs on different EU policies that relate to #CDR. 📅 This week we delve into the EU Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming Regulation (#CRCF). Achieving the European Union’s net-zero target by 2050 presumes not only significant emissions reductions, but also the complementary and sustainable deployment of carbon dioxide removal (#CDR). In this context, the EU Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming (#CRCF) Regulation plays a crucial first step. Read more about #CRCF's: ➡ purpose ➡ content ➡ impact ➡ next steps 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d-9xSnFA

  • 🌍 Congratulations to Ursula von der Leyen on her reelection as European Commission President for 2024-2029! 🎉 This important moment marks an opportunity to fully implement the Green Deal, lock in an ambitious 2040 climate target, and supercharge Europe’s competitiveness. As President von der Leyen rightly highlighted in her Political Guidelines for the next European Commission, "Our era’s greatest challenges – from security to climate change to competitiveness - can only be solved through joint action. Our threats are too great to tackle individually. Our opportunities too big to grasp alone. The world is in a race that will dictate who will be the first to climate neutrality and first to develop the technologies that will shape the global economy for decades to come. Reaching climate neutrality by 2050 will require a wide range of innovative technologies." The next five years are crucial for investing in permanent carbon dioxide removals (CDR), a key component in achieving net-zero. We call on the European Commission to: ➡️ Include CDR in its Clean Industrial Plan, ensuring sustainable investment in support of CDR in Europe ➡️ Set a separate carbon removals target in the revision of the EU Climate Law, with sub-targets for permanent carbon removal and LULUCF ➡️ Amp up R&D funding for CDR ➡️ Ensure a timely implementation of the Carbon Removal Certification Framework ➡️ Amplify international cooperation and EU efforts within global forums to bolster carbon removals For more details on NEP’s priorities for the next mandate, check out our manifesto: https://bit.ly/4cINEp3 Together, let's leverage innovative technologies and collaborative efforts to lead the world towards climate neutrality by 2050.

  • Our very own Secretary-General Chris Sherwood spoke in a panel at Carbon Gap's The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal in the European Union event on the second edition of the 'State of CDR' report. Speaking on the need for a portfolio approach when it comes to carbon removals, the NEP Secretary-General says, 'We need every country in the world to be looking in a very detailed manner at what their potential is to developing carbon removals locally'. Given the diversity of carbon removal methods that exist, there is something for everyone. If you haven't done so already, we encourage you to go through the State of CDR report: ➡ https://lnkd.in/d97fNnEE And watch the event recording: ➡ https://lnkd.in/eAsTk2Gh

🧮 Numbers speak louder than words The 2nd edition of the 'State of CDR' report reveals the gap between our carbon dioxide removal (CDR) needs and the current CDR deployment, and highlights the instrumental role policies play in driving further innovation and demand. 📖 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/d97fNnEE In the EU, important steps have been taken to develop and deploy high-quality CDR, via the Carbon Removal Certification Framework, the 2040 targets and ICM communications and several member states negative emissions strategies. 🌟 The EU and its member states now have a crucial role to play in developing a comprehensive and coherent EU-wide strategy to scale up a portfolio of CDR methods, with separate 2040 targets for emission reductions and carbon removals as its north star.   This and more was discussed last Thursday during our event dedicated to the state of CDR in the EU. Many thanks to our speakers Oliver Geden, Steve Smith, Andrea Klaric, Ulriikka Aarnio, Artur Runge-Metzger and Chris Sherwood for your valuable contribution, Rebecca Gualandi for moderating this insightful conversation, and Christoph Beuttler and Rodica Avornic for your scene setters!   We hope the reflections drawn from the second edition of the State of CDR and discussed with our panel inspire you to take action. ▶️ Watch the event recording here: https://lnkd.in/eAsTk2Gh   ⛱️☀️ We are looking forward to meeting again in September, refreshed and inspired! #StateofCDR #CRCF #2040targets

  • 🌍 Last week, the Austrian Federal Climate Ministry and Federal Finance Ministry unveiled its national Carbon Management Strategy, reinforcing its position as a European leader in the Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) sector.   The strategy includes several key action points: ➡ Assessing the potential of various permanent removal technologies to generate negative emissions within Austria; ➡ Setting up CDR targets; ➡ Lifting the ban on geological storage; ➡ Evaluating and optimising the use of existing and future financing tools to support the CDR sector.   We congratulate the Austrian ministries on this significant step forward and call on other European countries to develop their own national strategies to support the necessary deployment of permanent CDR 🌱🇦🇹   You can find the Strategy and the accompanying evaluation report on CO2 storage here: bit.ly/3RQ5Dl4
