Negative Emissions Platform works towards a better political recognition of carbon removal technologies and solutions.

About us

The Negative Emissions Platform is a Brussels-based partnership to improve the political and public recognition of carbon removal technologies and solutions. We represent technology developers, providers and sponsors, research centers, academia, think-tanks and the civil society. Our main focus is on engineered and hybrid approaches with a potential for permanent removal of CO2 - direct air capture and bio-energy with carbon capture and storage, enhanced weathering on land and in the oceans, biochar, soil carbon sequestration, mineralisation in building materials and the use of wood in lasting products and materials. We also actively promote the use of atmospheric CO₂ in e-fuels, materials and chemicals as a way of closing the carbon cycle, while delivering the economies of scale and cost reductions for atmospheric capture technologies. Membership in Negative Emissions Platform is open to a wide range of organisations (varying fees apply), providing they meet the following criteria: They fully support the platform objectives. They are, or want to become active in Europe as a technology developer, retailer, distributor, promoter or sponsor or; They are a national research entity, higher education institution, think-tank or civil society organisation dedicated fully or partially to contributing to research, advocacy and communication in the area of negative emission technologies. Last week, our Policy Manager, Elisabeth Harding, contributed as Rapporteur at the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) workshop in London, focusing on the role of carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) in the Corporate Net Zero Standard (CNZS). 🔝 The workshop gathered industry leaders and NGOs to discuss the upcoming update to the SBTi Net-Zero Standard, exploring what’s needed in the near term to support early adopters of CDR and create strong demand signals for the sector. 👏 NEP commends the important progress the SBTi has made and looks forward to continued collaboration! 🤝 A special thanks to Carbon Gap for facilitating this important workshop!

  • We were honored to organise a high-level workshop at the 4th edition of the Industrial Carbon Management Forum in Pau, France with the support of Carbon Gap. The session, titled "Financing a European CDR Ecosystem", brought together leading experts to shape a comprehensive toolkit for governments to secure financing for large-scale, permanent carbon removals. Breakout groups focused on identifying critical funding mechanisms across five key areas: ♾️ R&D Tools ♾️ Direct Financial Support Tools ♾️ Risk Mitigation & Indirect Financial Support Tools ♾️ Political Signals to Stimulate the Voluntary Carbon Market ♾️ Compliance Market The discussions generated valuable insights on policies and mechanisms that could drive the scaling of carbon removal across Europe. Our thanks to the European Commission for trusting the Negative Emissions Platform to lead this important dialogue on advancing carbon removals.

❗ 70 companies have signed the Carbon Dioxide Removal Industry Commitments, a groundbreaking initiative setting a new standard for the carbon removal sector, while reinforcing our collective dedication to combating climate change and meeting the ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement ❗ 🔍Why This Matters: The CDR Industry Commitments represent a significant moment for our industry, aligning with the scientific consensus that to achieve net zero, we must not only reduce emissions but also remove 5-10 gigatons of CO₂ annually by 2050.  📌 Key Pillars of the Commitments: 1️⃣ Clear Definitions: Establishing what CDR truly entails and its crucial role in climate action. 2️⃣ Commitment to Science: Acknowledging the necessity of CDR in our climate strategies. 3️⃣ Sustainability & Transparency: Upholding the highest standards of accountability and adherence to regulations. 4️⃣ Public Engagement: Ensuring inclusivity and equity in carbon removal activities. As initiators of these commitments, we are taking responsibility for the growth and integrity of the CDR sector. We invite all players in the CDR sector to join us in this shared commitment to building a future where carbon removals are done the right way, with accountability at its core.  Access the CDR Industry Commitments:  🌐 https://lnkd.in/eP7d4dh5

    Public Policy Leader

I'm just back from Strasbourg, where I had the opportunity to meet with Members of the European Parliament to discuss the critical role that carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) can play in tackling climate change. We focused on how the EU can foster the growth of this young, innovative, and optimistic industry and unlock its full potential. It was also great to catch up with our friends at Carbon Gap , with whom we are closely aligned on many priorities. Together, we are advocating for stronger signals from the EU to the market and are encouraged by the momentum we see toward consensus-building on key policies, such as the EU 2040 climate targets. The future of #CDR looks bright, and we expect growing support from the new European Parliament. Stay tuned for clearer political signals and continued progress!
